Fruit Culture in Prince Edward Island “Straws show which way the wind blows.’ Mr. William Kennedy, a few days since, bought trom William Brown, E-q , a barrel of Flemish Beauty Pears. This seems a small affair to but, notwithstanding, the transaction is n We first the Island where a grower has ever sold or produced a whole barrel of ove kind oct pears, Edward Island Pears, by the will not hereafter be au unkaown mercial commodity. notable one, Instance on bar el, Mr. Brown grew the pears in his garden iu town, toget)er with another barrel of anothe: smaller but delicious variety. At the receat Provincial Exhibition, Mr. brown exhibited a dish of Eimperor or Queer Vicoria plums. large, luscious, beautiful, but which were ruled out in the compe- au titicn for prizes, as these were limited to the common damson, greer gage, and purple plums. He also had on exhibi-| tion a couple of samples of gooseberries, as large and as handsome as any other pal the world could produce. Here, theretore, are three articles of fruit, shech, for quality, size, appearance and | procuctiveness, Mr. Brown shows eap ve crown on the Island to advantage. It well koown, however, that it is peasure and not profit which Mr Browu seeks ; and it is jus such efforts as he pats} iorh which develops the capacity | of this er other puts of the world. sf Meu of bis taste, and dixposition to risk ‘aud some means to experiment in igrenlture, horticulture, pomology, &e., lv much good in a community, as they teach beneticial lessons to others. Mr. Brown does not coufine himself to fruit culiare alove. He has a decided pev- chact for floriculture, as his grounds mae manifest ; and years ago was ulmost the first to show that the common eab- bave could be largely and profitably raied on our Island. A few years sinee, under the impression that only the yellow table ludian corn could be grown here, we were astonished to see the env) mous, matured, ani nicely-flavored sweet corn which he grew. He was amongst the first to show that this delicious and wholesome vegetable pro- duct could here be made to supply our tables in any quautities desired. We are impressed with the fact that the time has now arrived, when a Fruit Growers Society should be established on the Islaud, with headquarters at Charlottetown. Its rules should be wide enough to admitto membership, non-fruit growers, connoisseurs who lave some knowledge of fruits and their nomenela- ture. Members would, of coursa meet at stated times, and compare notes and experiences, aud preseot specimens at the meetings for discussion, as to desirability and adaptability to climate and soil ; avd also for correct name and classification. I: is evideut that our Exhibition Com- misioners should re-arrange and enlarge the Prize List for fruit. The fruit displays at both County and Provincial Exbibitious, are anauelly increasing in quantity of samples, sorts, beauty, per fection of growth, aud toothsomesness geaerally. Fine specimens of apples, such as Red Wiiliars, Gravensteins Emperor lexander, Red Astracans, New Bruuswickers, and of other varities (names uvkuown to us) could scarcely be itouud elsewhere, tban those shown at | our late exhibition. The display of other fruits, for table «and calivary purposes, was exceedingly fiue. We therefore again suggest that the Com- 6 hae te et ee ee, chronicle, | believe it was the! Tie New York Central end Erie took no part in the operations, maintaiming Friday's cut of $15 te Chicago, and $4 65 to Buffale The Gentral has also reduced rates to one cent per mile between New York and Buffalo. A prominent |railway man says that the fight has ouly commenced, and that before the end is reached the rate to Chicago will touch $5 It is predicted that freiyht rates must follow the passenger cut. Such has beer the rule, An open cut is announced from Toledo to Missouri rivcr points. The rate from Kansas City to Chicago is down to $11. The express companies have invelved inthe war. There is an atiemp: wpon the part of the Adame, the United States and An erican to crush the Baltimore and Ohio Express Company, by ordering their agents net to pay the advance rater to the latter, as is the custom amorg express men.
