Drifting Repidly Towards the Break- ers. Loxpoy, June 7.—The Madrid correr~ pondent of the Morning Post has had an interview with Senor Moret, former Secre- tary of the colonies, in the course of which he eaid: “ The Goveroment does not know where itis goiog. Moreover, t.ere isnot a person in Spain whocan tell the gutcome ofthe present situation, which is far more grave Lhan is general'y confessed. Che Government has po fixed plan. It to follow their own course, heedleas of the ultimate co usequences, “The thip of State is drifting. Besides it 1s useless to conceal the fact that the Cabinet is no longer solid, despite its re- construction. allows matters To-day, the confusion is complete. This is concealed as well as possible, but if the truth of the situation ever becomes known the most serious com~ plications may result. The present ministers lack energy. I won't say that they are voiceless, because they talk too much; but they never act. They are sb- eolutely impotent and are simply trusting to chance to get out of their troubles. ‘A campaign in favor of peace has begun a the press aud is progressing among the populace. Iam convinced tha: if a pleb- iscite were held, peace would be unani- oxsly voted, evea by the soldiers. The neen Re event has been \ ery ar justiy at- tached by Senor Castelar, who is already posing a3 president of the Republic; but, 1 mach doutt his abiltyto stir up a move-~ ment egainst the regency, “The regency menaced, but, for some timer past a change bas been taking place aod the aiversari s of the Queen have discovered the injustice of their at- tack. Affairs of Spain are in complete disorder.” Rossland is very proud of the big pay-~ ment of $500,000 made the otber day by the British America corporation on aceount of the purchase of the celebrated Leroi Mine inthatcamp. It isone of a series, tbe purchase price being three millions of dollars, The entire agreement, says the Rossland Miner, made by Colonel I. N. Preyton with the B. A. C. was cabled trom London to Spokave. There were | .420 words in toe message and the cost was $570. The principal beneficiaries of the sale live in Spokane, but W. J. Harris, of Rossland, is credited with about 40,000 shares, worth at $5 per share $249,000 The Preytone, Valentine, I. N. and W. A.. are jointly the holders of $950 000 worth of stock. while the Turner interests are listed at $522,000. Colonel Redpath is reputed to hold $230,000 worth of the stock. The deal opened with Leiter’s first order for 100,000 bushels of wheat at 703 » given by George H. French, on Apri 2ud, 1897, Then orders followed ach other .ia rapid succession a8 the market declined. 1897, when 500,000 bushels were secured at64ic. For months there was speculation as to where French, who a year before was haudling freight in a rail- road office, was getting the money to make his great purchases of wheat. It wasnot until September, 1897, that Joseph Leiter, the big Chicago broker, admitted that bis millions were behind the mysterious French. The operation which has lasted through thirteen mouths, carried the price of wheat from 6'{- & buehelin Jun-, to $1.85 in Muy, 1898, resulied in th: merchandizing of nearly 40,000,000 bushels of wheat, with an interest at one time in 35,000,000 buxhels. Other wheat deals pale in'o insignificance when com- pared with Leiter's. The president of one of Chicago’s largest banks says Leite:’s profits may reach $7,000,000. The Coin Came Back. **T bave once or twice read how smal) the world was,’’ said a young fellow, *‘and once cr twice I have seen storie: of the same kind I am going totell. ] confess I never believed them, but now I know better. Last summer, when in New York on my annual visit, I was struck with a sudden whim and scratched my initialson a 25 cent piece, cutting into the silver deep enough tc make a lasting impression. I paid for a cigar in the Hoffman House with the coin and guyed myself with being fool- ish. I had forgotten all about the quar- ter when I entered a Carrol)ton car and gave a half dollar tothe conductor. In- agine my surprise when he handed me in change the 25 cent piece I spent in the Hoffman House! I think I will keey the coin now and ever more as a curios- ity,’’ and the speaker pulled the money from his pocket and showed it in veri- fication of his story.—New Orleans Times- Democrat.
