A rather sharp ttisrussion then ensued between North and South over who had been responsible. North strongly criticized South's two-nolrtimp call. saying that this had virtually guaranteed a sec- ond spade stopper. She had slept through the winter in a hollow log where she had been protected trom snow and bitter cold. She had wakened early when there were few flowers in bloom, and these were hard to tiiid. She h a d flown this way and that, low over the Green Meadows. There had been no other Bumble Bees. She had found two or three of her cousins. the Honey Bees. but not a sign of another Bumble Bee. She hadn't minded this. She had not minded it at all. Shehad right away started to look for a place to make a home. Right over near the Dear Old Briar-patch she had t'ound just the kind of a place she was looking for. It had once belonged to Danny and Nanny Meadow Mouse. They had dug a snug little room in the ground partly under a thick clump of grass. Queen Bumble was delighted when she found it. "it's just the kind of a place I want," buzzed she. talking to herself. "It could not be better. it needs a ittttel fixing up, but that is all. I hope whoever made this home uont. come back." Right away Queen Bumble be- came very busy. She didn't work. too hard. but she kept ousy. Sher is naturally easy-going. ' "By the time 1 get this housel ready there should be enough; flowers opened tor me to get' all the pollen I need," said she. talking to herself. You know the golden powder found in the hearts of most flow- ers is called pollen. It is almost as important to the Bee folk as'it is to the flowers them- selves. So as soon as Queen Biinible thought that the house was readyy she went looking for pollen. Flow- ers were still not too easy to find. Of course she could get only a little pollen from each blossom, so it took a lot of fly- ing about to get the pollen she needed. Little by little she got enough pollen to make a ball in the house which she had prepar- ed for it. When that ball of pollen was big enough. she laid an egg on it. That ball of pollen, was both a bed. and food for the! baby Bee that would hatch fromt that egg. Then Queen Bumble went on collecting pollen to make anotheri food-bed on which to lay another' egg. Of course, that was a very nice arrangement. The babies ” 't have to be watched over. and fed every so often. like sot many other babies. They would just feed themselves by eating' their beds.
