The girl nodded. ‘You should have sent for me. They sav he died of—starvation.’ ‘Yes,’ answered the girl, cheerfully. ‘ Fle were awful clemmed, tht he were ; but law. why evenl didn’t know it.’ ‘Where did he live? asked Canfield again, and the girl, recognizing the clergyman, put off her suspicious ¢x- pression, and said— ‘Tf yell come in, Vil show you his . room He was buried yesterday, buta family is a-going to take the room to- night, and now I’m thinking it'll save me a trudge seeing yon, for Mr. Beales he gaye me a message to ye. Come in.’ I can neither write down all Molly Jone’s dialect, nor tell you all we found out, but this is the substance of it. Molly was employed as Heaven knows how so many are employed in London, and went off at seven in the morning, and came home at about the same time at night. She lived in one room with a mother and I know not how many brothers and sisters. Molly, with all her uncouth manners and appearance, had many good quali- ties, and was the only person in the house that Mr. Beales had at all confi- ded in, and he had not confided much in her. ‘ Look’ee here,’ said Molly, as we en- tered Mr. Beales’s room—four walls, oh how bare! not a stick of furniture ; that had all been sold long ago for rent ; but inthat room the tragedy detailed in my paragraph had been lived out. I felt a creeping horror ; but Molly talked on cheerfully. We looked, and she drew out of her dirty pocket a beautiful diamond ring. Iwas startled. The contrast of the room, the girl and this ring was too s*riking. ‘Spec's it’s reel, now,’ said Molly ‘Mr. Beales he gave it to me the night afore he died. ‘Molly,’ sez he, ‘you Tantonere: (CLOTHING, ETC. ‘Lor’, sez I, ‘are you a-going into the country, Mr. Beales ?’ ‘He didn’t answer for a bit like, and then he sez. ‘Yes, Molly, I think I’m a-going into the country; and then something he muttered about the land as wasn’t far off. It was a’most dark in this ’er room, so I didn’t see his face. ‘But you wants to hear the beginning of him. He war and old chap, that he ‘Yes, tell us all you know,’ said I. Why would my grumble of the morn- ing back se persistently to my mind ? ‘Well,’ said Molly, ‘he come and took the room and mostly kep’ himself to himself, but now and then he would speak to me as he went in and out. He looked as if he’d known better days, and he was tidy and clean like. He never got drunk nor nothing, but went out steddy to work most days. One day he said to me by accident: ‘Molly, my eyesight’s going, so they’ve turned me off.’ ‘ ‘or’, sez I, ‘yer must find some other work, then,’ ‘*Ves,’ sez he, ‘I will, Molly, God helping me’ ‘ He war of the religious sort, though he didn’t stick it down your throat, as some folks do, Ile war out most days looking for work, and now and then he got a job, and now and then he didn’t. But he never complained ; he warn’t one o’ that sort. One day he sez to me: ‘‘T hada wife, Molly, once, and a daughter, and she would be about your uge now ; but they are both in heaven.’ ‘Well, now, sez I, ‘they'd have done better to have stayed here; we don’t know what sort of a place heaven is, Mr. Beales. ‘No,’ he said; ‘ but folks don’t hun- ger there ; and then he stops short and says, ‘1 think Pll just go out and get my dinner.’ *We warn’t overflush of money then, waru’t me and mother, and vittles were uncommon scarce. ‘ Well,’ thought I, ‘Tam glad as Mr. Beales 2an go out and® get a dinner,’ but it’s’ my belief now, sir, a3 he used to say that for fear as I should offer him any of ourn. ‘One day he was in a regular fix; mother was out of work, and me, too, and the children was axin for food, and I fairly took te crying, as isn’t usual with me, when who should come in but Mr. Beaies at dinner-time, lookiie quite aE. EB. 1. R. T. J. B. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Dear Sir—It is now two years since your “Constitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced tome. Ihave waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to.you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be ‘‘too good to true.’ I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter o the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some -disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper. Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister.
