He really had a good de- fence; but being neither clear-headed nor fluent, he could not present it to the head- master. So he wrote it out in full to his father, asking him to present it. On reading the letter, the father thought the best thing would be toenclose the letter itself to Dr. Temple, merely asking him to overlook its Apparently, however, he had not noticed a postscript which the boy had writ- ten, in which he made the following remark: “If feould explain, it would be all right ; for, though Temple is a beast, he is a just beast.” Contrary to what might be expected, Dr. Temple thoroughly enjoyed the postscript, and he and the boy afterward became fast friends. = ——_—>—— Porice Covrt.—This morning one drunk was fined $] or 4 days, and another $3 or 14 days. After she killed the hens she sold them toa boy for twenty-five cents. This boy, it afterwards turned out, was an emissary of Collyer’s, and it was with the latter’s money that he bought the defunct hens, About the remaining two hens she knew nothing, and there was no evidence to show what became of them. A Distressing Shipwreck. SIXTEEN PERSONS LOST. New Gtaseow, Oct. 13. One of the most distressing and heart- rending shipwrecks that has ever occurred on our coasts happened at Little Harbor last night, by which sixteen men lost thejr lives. The bark Melmerby, Captain Olsen and crew of twenty-two men. set. gail on Wednesday, Oct. Ist, from. Quebec bound for Greenock, with a cargo of square lum- ber. On Sunday night, the 5th inst., they encountered a heavy. gale, from which the ship sprung a leak, and there was soon six feet of water in the hold. The pumps were kept going all night, but the bark became waterlogged, drifted aft, and finally struck on the ledge near Ray’s Island. The cap- tain and fifteen of the-men put off in a boat, but she swamped, and- all but one were drowned. Subsequently two seamen swam ashore. . Among the lost. are the captain and the first and second mates. Four men still remain on the wreck. The bark may hold ‘together to-night, but it is impossible to get to the men’s reseue owing to. the tremendous surf. 2 oe Some Tariff Changes. Orrawa, Oct. 13.
