communion with her visible forms, not
oniy does she speak a varied language, ea

the air is redolent with perfume and

on new life, vigor and beauty, we have
an expression of one of Natune’s happiest
moods. The good mother smiles upon us
then.
Summer with its heat. its serene cal,
broken occasionally -by suddenly gathered
thick clouds and elemental war, presents
other moods of equal charm. Autumn
follows with its ripened fruits, its gor-
geous panorama of rich hues, clothing the
forest with a marvellous splendor, which
in turn the storm winds of the season
strip away. And then comes winter with-
the sun running low over the southern

spreads a white pall over the landseape.

sons is the changing panorama of
the sky, never for twoconsecutive hours
presenting the same appearance; now a
glowing sapphire dome with the burning
sun enthroned and radiant in the midst;
now flecked with lleecy clouds or overcast
with grey or black. And through all
seasons we have “the miracle of. night and
morn," the jewelled dome of night in
sombre grandeur followed by the more
radiant splendor of the day. Thus it may
be said of nature with more truth t-han oi
the beautiful Egyptian Queen, “Age eau-
not wither nor custom stale her ininita
variety.”
One of the occasional and beautiful
variations of the winter season and its
snowy landscape is the silver thaw, such
as we have had recently presented. A
rail or mist falling through aeoldlstratum
of air next the earth,freezes as it. falls, en-
casiniz all visible and exposed objects in
ice. At such times thelandscape presents
a scene of such rare beauty as might furn-
ish a theme for a poet. The electric wires,
enlarged and weighted with their crystal
burden, hang like cords of silver strung
between the supporting posts; vrire fences
present the same silvery gleam beneath
the cloudy sky. and each particular tree
W f°"¢Si'fi P wk or garden becomes a radi-
ant pictuie which awakes the instant ad-
miration of the beholder. All varieties
of trees present rare features of beauty at
such times, but none are more beautiful
than the swaying clms, whose long,
sender branches, drooping under their
,nad of jewels, sway to and fro in the
breeze, a. model of glowing, living beauty
and grace. When on such a scene the
sun breaks forth and the bright light is
reflected from ten thousand glittering
pointsof crysta.l,f|ashing and scintillating,
earth seems to the artistic eye a veritable
fairyland. At such a time we forget the
charm of springtime flowers, the golden
glow of autumn’s fruit and all the splen-
