Great Loss of Wharf Pro- perty. Half a Million Burnt Up. ~~ Hatrrax, Oct, 2. The most disastrous fire that has occur- red in Halifax for years broke out at sleven o'clock last evening in Merlin’s planing mills, situated on Taylor's wharf, near the Cunard wharves. The following wharves were burned with the buildings thereon: Cronan’s North Wharf, John Taylor's Wharf, the Liverpool Wharf, DeWolf’s two wharves, North and South-W est Wharf, and Hamilton’s South Wharf. The buildings adjoining these wharves were also burned. The loss will reach at least half a million dollars. PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD. MEETING AT HALIFAX Election of Moderator. Statistics. Some Haurrax, Oct, 2. At the meeting of Synod last evening the Rev. J. McMillan, retiring Moderator preached ably from Psalm 122, verse 7, (**Peace be within thy walls and plenteous- ness within thy palaces”) upon the ambi- tion of the masses in times of prosperity. He showed that the last year has proved that prosperity is largely existing among us. Rev. H. B. McKay, of Wallace, was upanimously elected Moderator. The report on changes since last meeting showed 6 deaths, 8 licenses, and 2 recep- tions, One hundred and ninety-seven ministers and elders answered to their names. Postponement of Negotiations on Account of Blaine’s Health, nee tee nee ne mee Orrawa, Oct. 2. A telegram was received yesterday from the British Minister at Washington informing the Canadian Government that the state of Mr. Blaive’s health is such as to prevent him fiom taking pirt in the in the intended negotiations with Canadian representatives ou the 12th inst., requesting that negotia- tions be postponed until he should be able to participate. A reply was sent last evening assenting to the proposal, but expressing the hope that the meeting would not be delayed beyond the eud of the year, as the Canadian Parliament would reaseemble early in the next year, and it would be inconvenient for the Canadian ministers to be absent from here during the session, O'Brien Convicted. | Monrreal, Oct. 2. Richard Neil O'Brien waa found guilty yesterday morning, in the Court of Queen’s Bench, of libelling Prince George of Wales by sending false and malicious despatches tu the American papers. The jury was composed of half Eaglish ani half French and was unanimous in its verdict, but re- commended O’Brien to the mercy of the court, Donald McMaster, speaking for the pro- secution, said right had been vindicated, and they would be satisfied even if sen- tence were suspended. Judge Cross then read O'Brien a severe lesson, and he left the court. Mistaken Missioners. Sr Joun, Oct. 2. Reports from the British Farmer Dele- gates in the Mamtime Provinces show that they have quite mistaken their mission and appear much more anxious to resurreet the Cubden Club theories in Canada than to obtain the information which they came to procure regarding our country.
