"Long John Silver" At Prince Edward Robert Newton and a lively crew of talented artists brings us a dra- matlc answer on the Cinemascopa screen of the Prince Edward Theatre to the question of what happened to the picturesque char- acters created by Robert Louis Stevenson. The answer came int he form of "Long John Silver." with Newton in the title role of this spectacular Cinemalcope product- ion, filmed in Eastman Color in Australia for release by Distribut- ors Corporation of America. The talented Robert Newton fortunately agreed to eonti nue his interpretation of the title role .which he began so impressively as many will remember. in the Walt Disney success of a few years back. "Treasure Island." All the dram- atic ability which we have seen or- hibited by this great actor over the years in his many memorable roles is brought to hear in his charact- erization of "Long John Silver." But along side Newton. in the role of the young cabin boy Jim Hawkins. is a youngster who is a real "find." Young Kit Taylor does an excellent job in his first motion picture role. and it is to be hoped that he can maintain the candor and freshness which he brings to the screen in his role as Jim. In addition heis a hand- some lad who is without doubt one of the promises for the future. Connie Gilchrist proves delight'ul, too, in the role of Purity Pinker. hoping to be the one who can tame the raucous Long John Silver and get him to settle down to domestic tranquility. There is a big cast. and each one deserves credit for making the whole so outstanding, but to cite a few whose acting is noteworthy, there are Lloyd Berrell. as Mendoza the rival of Long John Silver; Grant Taylor, :0 Patch; Henry Gilbert as Billie wlegs; and Rod- ney Taylor as Israel Hands. Taking advantage of all this tal- eat and the values of production, the director Byron Haskin has real- ised a production which will appeal toyounlaIIiloIdaJ1ka.ItwssHas- kin who also directed the highly successful earlier production of H0 91 V .0 FOR Patients In Canada Declined In 1954 First admissions rose 59.2 per cent and readmission: increased 88.0 per cent. The increases, the bureau said. were due partly to a (id.-i-per-cent increase in the Canadian popula- tion over the same period. IMMIGRATION RATE HIGH The admission rate for immi- grants stood at 106.4 in 1946 compared with a general popula- tion rste of 77.1 for persons act- ually suffering from T3. The immigrant rate rose to I81 in 1947 and 135.3 in 1050 but has declined consistently to 71.7 in 1054. com- pared with a general rate of 62.2 for native-born Canadians with the disease. The bureau said the slow de- cline in the total admission rate is due to the numbers of persons found not to have TB after enter- ing hospital. Deaths from tuberculosis drop- ped 71.8 per cent during the last 10 years. A corresponding de- orease has taken place in the number of deaths in institutions which have dropped 02.4 per cent over the period. Bed complement of TB institu- tions increased from 85-2 (OT esch 100.000 of population in 1938 to 116.5 in 1964. Since 1040 the actual number of beds has risen uyioaa or 30.1 per cent. LAND OF LAKE!
