The Brantford Telegram says that those who are always howling about Can- ada’s debt would do well to note that the total nath nal debt of the Austraiiau colo- nies is about $800,000,000. The popula- ation of these colonies is only about 552,000. ** Tae EXAMINER ~The Patriot says: may De sincere In its advocacy of the tun- nel, but if se, we fear its Aonesty mM this case is the result of its ignorance, Well, Cue Examiner is in very good company Walter Shanley, to wit; and many others of the most distinguished engineers of the day. Mr. Gladstone, it is well known, considers radvertising as one of the great levers of the worid. The untenable position of the United States in its dispute with Great Britain re- varding Behring Sea is being cleariy ex- posed by American writers. Recently Mr. tobert Rayner, of Salem, Mass., published unable and exhaustive letter which com- pletely disposed of the American case, and now Mr Dal!, of the Smithsonian Insti- tute, of Washington, writes confirming his views in &ll essentiais. 4 London despatch t» the New York Post states that the story 1s current in Lon- lon that Salisbury has written to the Queen irging her to exact from the Princess Louise of Wales a promise that upon her marriage she will renounce all her rights to the succession of the throne. in the event of two sons of the Prince of Wales dying without issue the child- ren of the Princess Louise would be n the direct line of succession to the Crown. rhisis by no means such a remote con-| tingency, as may at first sight appear, | snd the fact that it is quite within the | bounds of possibility that Lord Fi‘e may, | in course of time, be the father of a mon- arch, justifies its discussion. Has Canada ever ried to get it? Has she even ever) earnestly asked for it? Not of Governments, asc yvet pave BerliousiVv but of the British people. Canada, in common with the rest of the colonies, has looked coldly on while, during the last six or seven years, 4 little band of earnest, but not prominent men in this country have been educating public opinion in favor of the commercial tederation of the Empire. Snubbed at first as akiu to madmen, stifled next with silence, then damned with faint praise, the work has ateadfastiy been carried on until the people of Great Britain are on the point of waking from their fatuous dream, that cheapness in price is more Loportant than a plentiful sup- ply. Let Canada and Australasia give us a “ar, plain, definite mandate to declare to oar fellow-countrymen that they desire and sre willing to emter into a commercial union with the Mother Country on the basis of differential customs duties, and within twelve | months we will light up such a fire from Land's Knd to John O'’Groat’s as shall illu- mine the wor'd as to the future policy of the pvitish race. felegraphic Odds and Ends. 4 BUDGET OF GENERAL NEWS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.
