Very many young men employed as clerks are possessed of a landabie desire to start in business, In one they are worthy of all praise for thei: ambition. all the detailsof their duties as clerks. | [f, by long and close application to| Hew . i they have acquired a clear and thorough | insight into their business, then let them try and start out on their own ac- count. Others are possessed of a deluded be- } lief that they know their business as well as “‘the boss,’ and fail to see why the measure of their reward should be 80 much smaller than his. Still others, und this is the most de- lauded class of all, lay the flattering unction to their souls that their services | Don’t | are indispensable to **the boss.” you ever believe that young man. You may bea highly usefal individual, know your business thoroughly, and at- tend to your duties conscientiously. We will admit all that. left such a big hole after himin this world, but that some otber person was found to fillit. History will tell you that. Cesar, Napoleon & Co. were Wise and great men, no doubt, but they all joined the silent majority, and still the world has managed to drag along without them, ’ Never bee yme possessed of the ‘dea that you area mercantile Cawsey or Napoleon, young mao No, not even if anyone is idiotenough to tel! you so. If youonce get that crank into your head, you will make yourse’if a bore to all your friends. This poor, paltry little world will not be hig enough to hold your high mifrhtiness. You will suffer from lack of appreciation. You will be genesaliy miserable, fretful and complaining. <A void that particu- lar shoal by all mea’)s We are always glad to see young men get ahead and prosper. Remember this, however, to be successful as a mer- chant, you mast be careful and hard- working as a clerk. Learn clerical duties thoroughly, and the responsibili- ties of proprietorship will come easy to you.— Commercial Enquirer, — The Thimble. The name of this little instrument is said to have been derived from *‘thumb- bell.” being at first *‘thumble,”’ after- wards “thimble.” It is aDutch invention and was brought to England about the year 1605 byJohu Lofting. Formely iron and brass were used, but lately steel, silver and gold have taken their places. In the ordinary maoufacutre, thin plates of metal are introduced intoadie and punched into shape. In Paris gold thimbles are manufac- tured toa large extent. Thin sheets of sheet iron are cut intodies of about two inches diameter. These being heated red-hot, are struck with a punch into a number of holes, gradually in- creasing in depth, to give them proper shape. Thethimble is then trimmed, polished and indented arouod its outer surface with anumber of little holes by means Of a small wheel. It is then con- verted into steel by the cementation process, tempered, scoured, and brought to the color. A thin sheet of gold is then introduced into the in- terior, and fastened to the steel by means ofa polished steel mandrel. Gold leaf is then applied to the outside, and attached to it by pressure, the edges being fastened to asmall groove made to receive them. The thimble is then ready tor use, and finds a ready market. me Special Notices, JoHN NEwWwson is at the top of the ladder in furniture.
