V All who follow the trend of the ‘momentous events now taking place in, theworld; all who keep themselves in touch with the affairs of the day; all who are living in the spirit of these unusual times, must thoroughly realize their duty to their country, and to the Empire of which Canada forms so import- ant a part. - _ ’ l » From»my knowledge of Charlottetown and Queen"s County,- extending over a long period, I am as- suredthat noworthy appeal will ever fail to reach the minds of our people, and 'to influence them to a gen_erous_ response. All _over Queens, County there are vacant places in the home; no one can walk abroad in the city or drive the length and breadth of the ‘county without constantly meeting parents whose sons have fallen on the battlefield and other parents whose sons are fighting in the great war. In the homes in the city, as well as in the farlnsteadings of the countryside; the mothers have been bowed down with grief and anxiety. How frequently we meet a crippled soldier! ,How often we have to speak a word of 'cheer and consolation to bereaved parents! How keenly we read the casualty lists from day to day! There are three 'headings in all -killed, wounded and missing. ` ' 7 You, who have never wept for one whose life is dear, give utmost thanks that yours have yet been spared to serve the common cause of right._ Thus are the people and the boys do. ing' their part and bearing their burdens. ' , ` ' Now, Canada has launched what is called the “1918 Victory Bond.” Its' success will give another, lease of greater endeav- or to our country; its success will supply Canada with in- creased trade and resultant pros- perity; its success will give a new impetus to agriculture, commerce and industry. It in- vigorates our elforzs in ,the war; it enables govern ments, federal and local, to finance their he"- pjuirements. -' For the farmer, ghe value ol the loan is inc'al,cul-' 0 V ' Donald Nicholsnn, M. P. able; it enables this country to export all that the farmer has to sell and to assist in its pur- chase. For the manufacturer it gives the best export market he has ever possessed, for it en- ables the Government to _spend millions a month for vvarpur-1 poses _and other purposes, in whichthe manufacturer is chief- lyinterested. Up to June 1918, our 'manufacturers had produced over sixty million shells, twenty million fuses, seventy-four mil- lion pounds of powder and fifty million pounds of high explos- ives. Oi the 1,654,000 tons of steel used in our country, for war work, 1,4oo,ooo_ _was pro- duced' in Canada. Contracts have also been let in Canadian ship yards _as well as in national war plants. ' ._ It is therefore imperative that the 1918§;Vic"tory Loan should be an even greater success than its pre- decessor. V ' We cannot continue to do our part infithe war without the required funds. We cannot obtain these funds unless the national activities are maintained up to a high pressure. This cannot _be accomplished un- less weminance the national activities which have. such a vital bearing on the situation our country is in. lcannot emphasize too strongly that the safety of our national structure and our participation in the war, depend entirely upon the successful results ot the Victory Loan. p I Great Britain is bearing a tremendous burden in the war. In the United States their Liberty Bond of 1918, has been oversubscribed. Canada is now doing her duty. The Allies are now close to victory. _ .As one of the representatives foi*°s~Q-ueens County, in which is the city of Charlottetown, I-eogpscious _of .the honor.af.~rapresentin_ge»thisz Bhiistitueucyj:-uprge the people to invest their money, so f_ar_ {a_§§',;';l!l*_'§`;__e1_a"re able, in Victory Bonfils.
