Iaguine THE CHARLOTTETOWN GUARDIAN SATURDAY MORNING JUNE 23, IMI. BRITISH NAVAL NAIIOUVEIIS. The war game now being played by tw: great divisions of the British navy on ir scale of unprecedented magnitude, is intended to test the practicability of delcndingihe British coasts and trade routes, and especially the food supply of the l`nited Kingdom in a war with one or more naval powers. Only second in importance to the food supply is that of raw materials for British industries. Ueprivcd of food there would be dangfl' oi the Kingdom being starved into sub- mission while want of raw materials from abroad would paralyse all industry. To Adurimls \\'llson in the English Channel and Beresford at. Gibraltar with their 245 ships is given thc task oi .scouring the British coasts for the cne- myw raiders and convoyinga great fleet of urcrcliantrrren, supposed to be bringing food supplies and raw materials. The "enemy" under Admiral May are supposed fo have secured a base at Bere- haven on the southern coast. of Ireland and another on the Isle of Man, whence they proceed to harry the British coasts and capture or sink British shipping. Already in the iuimic warfare the enemy has captured a number of big liners, and at tacked Portsmouth and Sheerness with torpedo craft, but were driven off. Tire esteemed Watchman protests that it is and always has been in favor of thc Tunnel, “undaunted by estimates oi cost." Moreover the Watchman shrewdly suspects that the editor of The Guardian is one of a group “who imagine that the mantle of the late Govemor Howlan may fall upon one of them." We cheerfully give enlarged circulation to so much of the \\’atchman's original view of the situation. \\'e are not, however, vcry ruuch concerned about the ruantlc. The Tunnel would be a good thing for all. which is of much more_ consequence than ‘ir mantle for any one person, especially i it should happen tobe a mlstlt.. Many buildings were practically ruined by the shocks before the fire broke out. Who can say what was the damage by the tire alone? Again, the water supply was cut off by thc earthquake, and this enomronsly increased the loss by fire. The companies claim that they ought not to bear this increased loss as their cont-racta pre- supposed an rmclent tire protection service. A still further complication arises out of the deslructiouof many huildingrsby dynamite in the effort' to check the conflaizralion. I l I ,list to provide supervised play grounds CHURCH UNION. ITS PRESENT STAGE So much has been anld and written ln regard tochurch union that a mlscon c:pl ion has been formed in a good many minds as to the present stage of the movement. They have anticipated what has not yet been done. Some newspapers have fallen into this error and one Toronto journal the other day spoke of the Presbyterian General Assembly having "pronounced in favor of union as the Methodist and Congregational bodies had before done." It proceeded that the articles drawn up form the protocol of treaty which the Assembly is ready to turn intoa binding union. TheToronto Globe corrects this urls- conceptlon and affirms that the General Assembly has neither pronounced in favor of nor against church union, nor has union been sanctioned by either thc hlcthodists or Congregationalists. The Globe adds: "The work so far accomplish- ed is in every sense tentative. Its purpose is to present certain grounds as common to all three Churches. The utmost involved in tne report is that so far the Joint Committee has not found any insuperuble obstacle in the way of union. The only obligation at present resting upon any of the Churches is to continue with honest endeavor the work of investiigation and conference until it is ascertained whether union is feasable." The Telegraph and Times subscription in St.John has considerably passed thc thousand dollar urark. Christian Science is apparently making progress. Its splendid new cathedral in Boston cost $2,0lll,tll0, is very grand and beautiful, and what is better is entirely free oi debt. WHAT CAUSES A PPENDICITIS.
