One other point. Senator Hughes considers that Premier Saunders was very remiss in his duty in asklnB for only $200,000. increase 1n subsidy in lieu of public lands, because he himself could prove that we were en- titled to over 0400000- “quite a. dif- ference and surely worth looking ln~ w." I have “looked into" this differ- once very carefully, and find that it is msde up of means-that is, in- wrest on a. capitalization of the amounts we should have received 1n the pest. but did not. That this is a valid claim cannot be gainsaid, but the Senator is very wrong in supposing for an instant that he is the discoverer o: this fact. However, our Government went t0 Ottawa with a number of claims, and if arrears are added to one they may equally well be added to others. The total claim presented in 1927 was for an increase in subsidy of $730,304.00, and who would be so sansulne 8s W hope for so much being granted? Why, then, clutter up the record with a further‘ claim for arrears? I have made a. rough calculation 0f what our claims would have been with ar- rears added. and find that to meet such a. claim 3,009,014.00 additional would be required. Or, with com- pound lnterest, (and why not?) over $5,000,000.00 would be required. In all fairness, does the Senator really think there would be “unjust discrimination" if the increase granted were less than $3,000,000.00 yearly? Yet it is on such an hypothesis that the Senator bases his attack on the Premier. The former was more modest in his demands in this con- nection in 1012 when he said on the floor of the House of Commons (l-lansard, March 26th, 1912)-"Sure- ly if Prince Edward Island is to new. consideratiori...you would give her an additliinal $15,000. and also an ai- lowanoc of arrears... and these items would (all) equal $100,000." Can n. be s, recurrence of this mod- esty which apparently forbids him, now, to cooperate with our Govern- ment ln this nutter of ‘subsidy? It must be modesty. Truly, s. virtue! I am, Sir, ete. -‘ J.
