THE CATTLE EMBARGO.
Years ago when there was some cattle
disease in Canadaa restriction was placed
by the Imperial authorities on the impor-

has long passed away. There is quite as
iitllc dangerof British cattle becoming
infected from Canadian cattle sent to
the British market as there would

infected from cattle imported fron
England if the latter were equally
numerous. But the restriction, which
was imposed as a measure of safety in the
first place has been continued merely as a
protective measure, `to prevent the too
_‘ strong competition of Canadian beef with
that produced in Britain.Hence the rule is
still obligatory that Canadian cattle must
be slaughtered immediately on being
landed in the old country.
All this is contrary to sound policy, is
unfair to Canada, and condicts with the
settlel policy of free trade which is claim-
efl to prevail in the United Kingdom. It
is moreover against the interest of the
British consumer, and also against the in
terest of a considerable class who, years
ago were engaged in the importation of
Canadian cattle to be fattened, or to have
the fdttening process completed on the
other side. This was at one time a large
and profitable business, so large in fact
that at Dundee, Scotland, some £30,000
was expended by the harbor trustees in
providing wharf accommmodatlon for
this particular trade. Those whsrves are
without tenants and useless to-day
because of the cattle embargo. We think
another effort ought to be made to secure
the abrogation of these restrictions, and
effort might be made successful.

One of the most common, at the same
time one of the most to be dreaded, ail-
ments which alilicts th_e people of this
country is nervous debiiiry. The causes
of leading to the trouble are various,
overwork or worry being among the
most prominent. But whatever the
cause, the affliction is one that makes
life a burden. Such a sufferer for years
was Miss Margaret Gillis, of Whim Road
Cross.P. E. I. Her life was one of al-
most incessant misery, and she had come
to look upon her condition as incurable,
when Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills were
brought to her notice, and to the llfegiv-
ing, nerve restoring medicine, _
she now owes health and happiness.
Miss Gillis tells of her illness and cure as
follows: “For the past eight years my
life has- been one of constant misery. My
nervous system was shattered, and I
wasreduced toa mere physical wreck.
Mytroubie began in one of [the ailments
that so frequently afflict my sex. I was
irritable and discouraged all the time,
and life did not seem .worth living. For
seven years I was under treatment by
doctors. I even went to Boston and
entered ahospital where I remained for
some time. While there the treatment
temporarily benehted me, but soon my
condition was worse than ever. Finally
my nervous trouble took the form of
spasms which caused more suierlng
than words can tell. When thus attack-
ed I felt as though I was literally being
torn apart. I would frequently become
unconsicus and sometimes would re-
‘_ main in that condition for half an hour.
I have sometimes had as .many as six of
these spasms in a week, and no one
who has not similarly suiered can
imagine the tired, wornout, depressed
feeling which followed. Doctors seemed
uteriy unable to do anything for me.
