COLD STORAGE That we need coll storage warehouses, is admitted and cold storage on the railway and the steaniers pl; ing between Charlottetown, Seinmcrside and the Mainland. One link in chain would beet little use until the chain is completed We need to be able to store, or to send cast and west meats eggs, fruits and other products which require s moderately low temperature ,for their preservation At Point du Chsnc or st Picton we can connect with the cold storage cars of the Interoolonial. Until we have cold storage warehouses at our principal shipping ports, on the Island Railway and on the steamer-I plyisgtothc mainland we shall beats great disadvantage and our shipments ot certain products must sufcr damage before or during transportation It is to be noted that the arrangeinent entered into tentatively with the Domin ion Packing Company does not provide for the completed chain which is re quired to give the Island the required facilities and security for cold storage. Moreover we have no stipulation as to the rates to be charged by the Packing Company for storage in its cold storage warehouses. This is a paint of importance Such warehouses would no doubt be of great advantage to the Company in their business, but if the Company areto be giv- en a Government guaiautee, it is vital that they shall be bound to give full ac- it may be their rivals in business-at reus- onable rates and at all times, otherwise tbclatter will be wholly at the mercy of the monopoly in regard to cold storage. _ This raises the question whether it would not be much better to have our cold storage warehouses, s y at; Charfottz- town, Summerside, and Suuris or George- town, in the hands ot a separate company independent of the Dominion Packing Company or of any individual llrm, so that all shippers requiring cold storage would be iully assured ot fair and equal treat- ment and accommodation. A company could easily be formed on the Island for this purpose if the Government would give its guarantee of their bonds for a. much less amount than it is proposed to guaran- tee for the Packing Company. This would I bcssale undertaking and of nndoubtcd benefit to many producing and shipping interests. Leave the m°at packing and canning industries to private enterpiise as they have been hitherto. In this way on present industry or enterprise would be endangered and all ttar of monopoly would be removed. Let the Government use its large in- fluence with the Railway Department of the Federal Government to ‘have cold storage or refrigerator cars placed on 4 the ` Island Railway, and then we doubt not that the S;eam Navigation Company could be induced to provide cold storage chambers on their boats, thus completing the chain ot cool transport ition east and west. It is along the lines above indicat- cd or their equivalent that we think our Government might proceed with safety, With the general approval of all concerned storm of objection and disapproval which hnsbeen called forth by _too hasty accep- tance of the outside capitalists’ proposal i_; _Msny persons resident in Prince Ed ward G Island, but who ` were either burn in li Scotland or are ofScotch descent, hnve been desirous tosee the heather growing in the ' una or men- adoption.
