Pay Your Taxes Promptly, and Save ‘l'wo-and-a-half Per Cent. Crrizens would do well to remember that if they call upon the City Clerk, and pay} their taxes now or any time previous to the twelfth day of August next, they will save a discount of two and a half per cent. They would alaodo well to remember that on every hundred dollars they pay in to re duce the city’s the bank they save eight dollars interest to the cer poration. So that by paying promptly they As private individuals overdraft at gave in two ways. they lessen their yearly expenditures, and as members of the corporation ‘hey lessen the annual expenditures of the city. Prices, in general, are munch lower in this Island than they have been. A mer- ehant in high standing informs us that im- ported goods are now seld to our peeple at rates, on the average, at least twenty per cent. lower than they were in 1872, and wther years previous to Confederation. But we repeatedly hear complaints of over- charges on the part of hotel-keepers, livery-stable keepers, and others who do business for the travelling public. The ease of Messrs. Connolly and Essen, in which the latter was charged $20 for driv- ing about a mile, and using a carriage and pair about two heurs, is a case in point. lrue, ‘‘ Princess Prices’ prevailed. Aud if tourists are pre- vented from coming here by the fear of being fleeced, the Island and the tourists will both suffer incaleulable loss. In no part of America should the prices of those things which strangers need, be cheaper tian here ; for here, we ourselves produce, at first hand, nearly everything they re- quire in abundance. *_/-_eae + - Smuggling. As billing potatoes is the practice general throughout this Island, it would be well for our farmers to experi- ment a little and see whether or not they are following the best method. Certainly the potato plants look better when hilled up in the row; but if hilled potatoes do not yield so well, then beauty should, in this case, be sacrificed to utility. a -7a__er- A Woman's Desire for Liquor. The danger cf tampering with liquor was recently exsmplified in the case of Mrs. Maria L. Judson, a young woman with an unusually intelligent face and a ladylike manner. She was recently arraigned in New York on a charge of being drunk and disorderly in a street car, She was born of wealthy and respectable parents. She re ceived a good education, and at the age of eighteen was married to a man named Jud- son, who is in the wholesale liquor business in Connecticut, and’ who is said to be worth from $200,009 to $300,090. For about eight years the couple lived happily toge- ther. The wife then began to acquire a taste for spirituous liquors. Eiforts were made by her husband to save her from the fate which threatened their happinesz, but ie failed; the result was their separation, A divorce was secured subsequentiy by the neitand, who, hewever, kept hiimself.in- formed of his wife's mede of living. Find- ing that she was leading a sober life, and through the perseverance of friends, he had the decree of Givorce set aside, and was re- married to his wife. It was only fora ‘time, however, and her fail the second time was even vreater than the first. The Galois gives some interesting parti- culars respecting the visit of the Empress Eugeniegto the place where her son was killed. Leaving Helize on the Ist inst, the Empress expressed a wish tv ascend the hill where the ambulance stopped to take up the remains of her son. Thence she proceeded on foot into the valley towards the donga where the body was found, fel- lowing precisely the same track as the officers who went in search of the corpse. The road was stony and rough, but in spite of all remonstrances from her attendants, the Empress persisted in her intention, In the distance gleamed the white monument, thrown into sharp relief by the dark background, but it only seemed to catch the eye of the Empress when she got tothe bank of the donga. Then she lifted her hands as in supplication towards heaven, the tears poured over her cheeks, worn with sorrow and vigils; she spoke no word and uttered no cry, bat sank slowly on her knees. A French priest repeated the prayers for the dead, and the servant Lomas, who had been an eye-witness, went through the sad story of what had happen- ed last year.
