His lather was a bully. His grand- [other was a bully. His great- grandfather was a bully. Bully- ing is what is called a family trait, and r family trait is something one is born with and so has whether it is wanted or not. No one likes a bully, so none of the feathered folk in‘ the Old Or- chard like Bully the Jflnglish Spar- row. English sparrow is his com- mon name because the first of his kind in America were brought from England, but European Spar- row would be better. for his family is found in most of Europe, not just England. What's in a name Jimmy Skunk often is called a Polecat and he isn't a Polecat. There are no Poiecats in this big land of ours. Prickly Porky the Porcupine is called a Hedgehog, yet he isn't even related to the Hedgehogs. None of these live in anyway‘! Dummy's Jack was played. and East covered. De- clarer took the trick and cashed hi top trumps, receiving some- thlng oi a. Jolt when East turned up with two tricks in the suit. This was a disturbing develop- mentwand South thought matters over very carefully. Then he led a club to tha queen. He did not make the mistake o! cashing the club ace; instead. he led the sin- gleton spade from dummy. East played the Jack in a desperate ei- ort to get in and draw dummyb trump, but South carefully cover- ed the Jack with the king. so that the lead would go to West. West took the trick and return- ed the club king. The ace won and South now entered his own hand by leading a diamond to the eight-spot. He ruifed a spade with dummy's Jack and then play- ed diamonds. East ruffed in as sodn as possible. but South got rid of his last spade. and thus lost only two heart tricks and one spade. It is worth noticing that ii South had cashed the club ace ai- ter tlnessing to the queen, and then had led spades, East could have rufied his partner's club re- turn with the ten o! hearts, cash- ed the heart queen to draw dum- my's jack, and cashed another spade trickier the defeat o! the contract. South's timing had to be precise. W. Burgess! America either. Welcome Robin isn't a Rabin. but a Thrush. and Bully the lllngllsh Sparrow isn't a Sparrow according to some folks, bet a kind o! Finch. However, most folks consider him a. Spa-r- row. And while his branch o! the family once wasn't American it la now, juit as much so aa you and I. That is because it has been here so long. Bully and Mrs. Bully had their nest on Farmer Brown's barn. They had moved there several years ago when they had been driven out of the Old Orchard, and had remained there ever since. They could see all that went on in the dooryard and the barnyard. It was easy to keep watch of the henyard and be on hand for a share oi food when the Hens were fed. The Old Orchard was near enough for them to Join promptly in any excitement there might be there. ‘ Now Bully is a natural born fighter. He loves to tight. Some people do, you know. He is a rough and tumble tighter and no coward. ‘There isn't a cowardly feather on him. He doesn't dart in, strike and dart away, but sticks right there and fights bill-to-biil. His is the kind of a fight that is called a brawl. Bully had watched Skimmer the Swallow and Mrs. Skimmer chas- ing and catching the white feath- ers Farmer Brown's boy had tossed in the air for them. Mrs. Bully had watched, too. They had seen the Skimmers take those feathers home as last as they could catch them and take them away from the Merry Little Breezes who were having fun blowing them around. "I would like some of those feathers for our own nest," said Mrs. Bully. "I'll get some ior you," promis- ed Bully. "How? They are all gone. Those Skimmers have taken every last one oi’ them." replied Mrs. Bully. "I'll go over there and take some away from them. It isn't right for them to have all of them," declared Bully. ' "You can't get them with Mrs. Skimmer in the house sitting on them," retprtad Mrs. Bully. "She won't stay on them all the time. I'll watch until she leaves the house. I can slip in and out again in a Jiffy. Once I get them i would like to see those Swallows take them away irom me. They can't fight. ‘Iheir bills and feet are too small for fighting. I'll get you a couple of those feathers, my dear," boasted Bully. Bully didn't have to watch long. There were no eggs yet so Mrs. Skimmer didn't stay inside the house more than a tow minutes at a time. Bully watched until both Swallows were out chasing flying insects. It: didn't take him but a minute to get over to that house and less than that to get inside and out again with a couple of those white feathers. Ha stopped on he roof of the house for just a moment to see where the Skim- mers were. Biff! He was hit from behind and knocked headlong into the grass below. It was so sudden, so unexpec ’, he was quite help. less. Before he realized what was happening, those leathers were matched from his bill. Bully was righting mad, but he was helpless. That made him all the madder. The trouble was h; wgggft qmgk enough. Skimmer would dart in, strike and be gone before Bully could strike back.' He had made a mistake when he said the Skim. mers couldn't tight. (to-Operative Nesting Harrington Hall April 2m. W. R. Show will address this meeting and discuss matters of interest to everyone.
