BY JAMES JEFFREY ROCHE When the sword is sheathed and the canvon lies Dumb and still on the parapel, For the apider to weave lis silken net And the doves to nest in its silent mouth ; When the manly trade declines and dies, Aud hearts shrink up in ignob!* drought, When piti‘ul peace reigns every where, What is left for old Corporsl Pierre ? Novght remains for an honest wight But to write tor bread as the poets do, Beggarly scrawls for paltry sous. The billet-doux and the angry dun To the writing-macbine are all as one, What matter the world or sentiment? If the fee be pai? he is well content, To have heart in one’s trade, ab! one fig ht. must ‘«M’eieu, if you please,” and a timid hand Is laid on the soldier's threadbare sleeve, Pierre was bearish that day, | grieve To say, and his speech was curt, As will happen when want or old hurt— “I wish you to write a letter, pl-ase.” “All right. Ten sous” But the little boy Has turned away, “Morbleu! Well, then, You haven't the money? You think that pen And ink and paper grow on trees Pm Halt! Can't a soldier his joke enjoy But you must flare up? I understand wounds A begging letter, of course. And who shall be favored to-day? Dictate—“M’sieu,” ‘Pardon. "Tis not ‘M’sieu.’ Madame, La Lainte Vierge,” the writer stopped, | And the pen from his trembling fingers dropped ; The desk was shut with an angry slam. “Sapri:ti! you little rascal, you Would jest with the Holy Virgin, too? But the child was weeping, and old Pierre Suppressed his wrath end indulged ® stare, ‘““My mother, M’sieu, she sleeps so long, These two whole days, and the room is cold, And she will not awake lt is very wrong, I know, fora boy to be afraid When a boy is as many as five years old. But I was so hungry, and when I preyed And the Virgin did not come, I thought Perhaps ifI send her a letter, why’— He paused, but old Pierre said nought There was somethiog new in the old inroaft, man’s And something strange in the old man’s eye. | At length he took up bis pen and wrote. Long it took him to write and fold And seal with a hand that was far from bold Then: “Courege, small comrades, wait #nd | gee; Your letter is mailed, and presently An answer will come, perhaps, to me. Behold, ’tis there ! ? I will opea my desk, ‘From Heaven,’ it says, ‘a M’sivu Piorre. You ¢o not read ? N’importe! I do 'Tis a letter from Heaven, and all about you. And what? ‘Mamma isin Heaven, too; And ber little boy must be brave and gooa And live with Pierre. That's understood. While Pierre bas a crust or a sou to spare There's enovgh for him and thee, mon cher. De you think that letter came from above, Freighted with God’s and a woth:r’s love’? The chijd at least, believed it troe, So at the last Pierre did too, When the Heavenly mail came once again, To a grim old mau on a bedof pain, Whose dyirg eyes ulone could see, And read the mis-ive jovfully, He knew the Hand aud proudly smiled, For it was as the hand of a little child, An Eccentric Dundee Minister. The Rev. T Weston was an eccentric Minister at che rise of Con- gregationalism in Sectiand spd was for ~ome years pastor of ihe West Port omas . . . | Independent meeting-)ouse in Dundee. After ceasing to be minister of that congregation, he was in the habit of itinersting through Scotland, anc preaching in the halls, more especially those belonging to Mason supporting himself by collections at the door. He frequently repaired to the town where he furmerly ministered. He had often crowded audiences, attracted by the quaint, humorous illastrations which he delighted toindulge io. On one oecasion, when preaching in a small hallin Dundee, the Rev. Dr. Peters, ene of the ministers of the Established Church, was desirous of hearing him, but at the same time wished todo so unobserved and attempted to screen himself from the notice of the audience by standing behind the door. The pre- caution, however, was unavailing. Theeye ofthe preacher detected his presence ;and the congregation ,were apprised of the fact by a supplication on behalf of “Thy reverend servant behind the door.” An Adventurous Voyage by Por- tuguese. Two Portuguese explorers, who start- ed last year for a trip across Africa, have reached the Cape after some of those pleasant adventures which are so dear to the bosom of the explorer. Leaving Mossamedes in March, 1884, with an escort of 120 men recruited along the coast between that place and St. Paulde Loanda, they reached Quil- limane, upon the eastern coast, to the south of Mozampique, in May, 1885, after haviug discovered the watershed wheace the rivers of Central Africa flow north and east towards the sea. They travelled over 4,500 miles of terrritory of which 3,000 were totally unknown, and they dis- covered the sources of the Lualada, an affluent of the Congo, which has heen so frequently referred to in recent geographical discussions, They also came upon 4 region rich in copper, this being the district of Yaranganga,s'tuat- ed between the Lualaba and the Lua- pala. Their expedition was attended by great hardships, and they lost two- thirds of their escort before reaching Cupe Town, ; A Dundee buiiie, named Hunter, re- cently sentenced # starving Inborer to 40 days imprisonment ior stealing 3 «pples, Tet Lodges, sup- | Special Notices. -— Fearrut Staveutrer now going on in clothing at L.
