The expenditure on the streets was exception-

announced, through the Attorney-General, that ap-
pointments of Crown prosecutors and other legal
representatives will not go by political favor, but by
merit. The farmers of Middlesex think that in the
matter of appointments in their county there should
be the guidance of a local committee. The Attorney-
General appointed a lady to the registrarship of Mid-
dlesex, on representations, apparently, that she had
the qualifications, and was next in line. The farmers
there are protesting vigorously against this method.
