Orrawa, Nov. 30.-—The department of trade and commeree bas received two re- ports from South America, in which the avent deals fully with the question of the puss ibilities of trade between Canada and Brazil and Uruguay. In regard wo Brazil, Sheppard says sugar, which formerly came from taere to this country, is not consumed athome. Absut $52,000 worth of Can- adiap lumber was imported into Baazil last vear. President Moraes, of Brazil, did not hold out any hope of a large busi sness being worked up between the two countries. With a Brazilian tariff of an average of 50 per cent it is not likely that a large trade is possible. Much speculation is being indulged in as to the manner in which the new move will de received by the howe government and the gavernments of the sister colonies. In s<ime quarters the opinion is expressed that Cauada’s action, taken agit is with- out coorultation with the different colonies, will not be received altogether with such favour as may compel a reciprocal move on the part of the other colonies at a time wheu they were not prepared for it. At the meeting in London, bet ween Mr Cham- berlain and tue ‘colonial premiers, the question ot] mp-rial penny postage was under consideration, when cn'y Cape Colony and Natal, declared in favur of the proposal, the other eolonies holdiwg tha tinanc al reasons would operate azainst such proposal.
