RAILWAY The Eastern Freight Train Derailed Yester- day Afternoon---Car with Seventeen Horses Accident Alleged to be Due to Swerving of the Horses. to extricate the imprisoned animals When an aperture had b.en made, horses were found in all positions, some lying, some standing, and some pinloued by others while one had resting upon his leg a large mass of wood work. One by one they were taken out and the work was atten- ded with great danger from the excited animals. But the men headed by (lon- duetor llibbett worked with a will and are tc be commended. In a short time all were got out, some badly cut cn the head, body and legs and a few \10il\.iurcd. They were taken to the stables of the Moreli House where they were treated by Dr. Leokis. None are thought to be fatally injured but the ex- tent of the damage will not be fully known for a day or two. After the animals had been taken out the work of clearing the wreckage was commenced and in a short time the track was cleared and open. In an hour after the accident the eastern express was able to pa=s, only a few minutes behind time. This was exceptionally quick work and highly creditable to Superintendent Sharp who was among the first present, to the men under him and to the specta- tors who lent a hand at the work. The cause of the accident is not drtln- ately known as yet. The train was running the usual rate at this point of about ten miles an hour and it is alleged tha', while rounding the curve, thc horsts were thrown towards one side thus over- balancing the car and causing ir. to leave the trucks. Another opinion expressed is that the car containing the seventeen horses was defective and the accident. was defective and the accident was caused by something dropping from it underneath the wheels. It. ha been stated that the car was overloaded but this is not the case as twenty horses are frequently carried. In fact the closer they are packed the better, for then they support each other in the roeklng of the car. The horses were all fairly valuable ones ranging in price from $100 to $l40. While being taken out cf the debris they acted intelligently and appeared Io unncrszand the situation. This prevented greater injuries than would naiurilly be ex- pected. Sleeping beneath some large piles of sleepers were two young men of the city who frequensly lend thernsclves to Bacchanalian celebrations Trey we e aroused from their alumbers by flying lumber which the derailed car had struck. When they were cxtricated itwas found they wcrc more frightened than injuiei though they had a narrow escape. The car containing the inrize number of horses is almost |m.»~li\ destroyed. The other is not badly iijureii.
