Cw Earlydianada Painted By Army Officer ny Kl-IN KELLY Canadian Press Staff Writer o'l'rAwA. (OP)-An early page in Canadian history has come to light. Through the eyes of the Brit- ish army officer who raised the first British flag over Montreal. Canadians now can see what their country was like between 1157 and 1812. . The officer, 'I'homas- Davies. served for many years in Canada during his long career in the Brit- ish army. Whiie here he painted as e hobby, recording in detail town and countryside in a series of watercolors which now have been bought by the National Gal- lery. There are 20 pictures in the series which lay slinost.toi-gotten for 150 years in the collection of the Earl of Derby. A London art dealer re-discovered them and ad- vised the National Gallery that they were available. The gallery snapped up the offer, asking that they be sent to Can- ada on approval. It was decided subsequently to buy them for about 5200 each. ' Davies had an interesting career. particularly in North America. CP- .:-mm:-mm-:-mmz:-1 British army in the lath and 10th oentury, Kane's Lists. has this to say about him: "He saw much service in North America durliig the operations con- nected with the conquest of Can- ada. At one time while a lieuten- ant he commanded a naval force on Lake Champlain and took a French frigate of 18 guns after a close action of nearly three hours. "Lieiit. Davies hoisted the first British flag in Montreal. He served as captain of a company in the most; important actions of the American revolutionary war. Dur- ing his long service he had com- mand of the royal artillery . . at Gibraltar. in Canada. and at Plymouth. He was also two years commandant of Quebec." This was the man who turned his military skill in topographical drawing into an off-duty pastime. The 20 watorcolors, range in date from rm. when as a young lieuten- ant. he painted a rather primitive View of Halifax. to 1812 when as a major-general he ilniahcd a more-sophisticated View of Mon- treal from the mountain. Davies joins a long list of mili- tary painters of that time. but gal- lery officials say he has a sound claim to being the father of cans- dian landscape painting by virtue of his priority in the field. his im- agination and technical skill.
