The Wheatley River Church choir gave an entertainment coneisting of a concert and social on tue evening of the 7th inst., The excellence of Wheatley River con- certs is beyond question and this one was no exception to tne rule, for everything was up to the standard, and we can un~ hesitatingly say that the choir has added another successful entertainment to the number already given in this place. The roads were not in a condition as favorable as would be desired tor such an event, yet the ball was filled with an appre- ciative audience as evidenced by the hearty applause accorded the performers as each number on the programme was rendered. Mr. Jobn Rackham was chairman and excellent or- der was maintained throughout the entire evening. The programme ccnsisted of a pleasing variety both musiealjand literary. The musical part was under the direction cf Mies Louisa and Mr. Jacob Smith, which fact is certain proof of the excel- lence of that part of the programme. The solos were of high order of merit, es~ pecially Miss Smith’s, “Break the News Gently to Mother.” Mr.SSmith’s ‘‘ The Man behind the Plough,” and Mr. Sellar’s ratrict’c piece, * The Land oi the Maple.” Mise Ethel Oxenbam played ihe ac- rompaniment to Miss Smith’s einging. The dialogues were presented in a par- ticularly pleasing manner. The acting of Malcolm and Ilda xackham in “Soaring Aloft” was extremely true and gained much applauee. David and Johuuy Stevenson and William Cruwys in the other dialogues were the funny men of the night, avd by their witticisn* and drolleries created many a broad grin and round of applause. At the conclusion of the pro- gramme Mr. W. D. McCoubrey, of New Glasgow, auctioned the pies in bis usual happy and successful style. When the proceeds of the night were made up it was found thata handsome sum had been realized, and everyone seemed pleased with the night’s enj oyment. We seein the papers frequently, ac- counts of meetings of Forresters, Sons of Temperance, etc., but seldom e« word from the Good Templ-re, whose aim is equal to any. Though there are, no doubt, many earnestly contending for the prin- ciples of owr noble order, we fear some may have grown weary in well-doing. Eastern Gem Lodge, 1 O G T, continues to meet every Saturday, weather permit- ting. Yet, we note with regret the pro- longed absence of some of our worthy members, who,ow'ng ‘o their abilities have been im the past our tower of streogth. At cur meeting of the 3rd inet, the sum of $13.00 was granted as a tris! order for bovke, to form the nucleus of what ehall be knewn as the Gem Library. After appointing a new stalf of ofncers, Mr. C. C. Dingwell being Chief Templar, Sister Dunbar read an interesting paper narrating an incident happeoiog in rural life. This was the aeveoth paper duriog the quarter. Ono motion of a prominert member, the following resolution was upanimously paseed : Whereas, It has pleases the Ruler of all thinge to remove from our midst one of the old landmark, inthe person of .he late Donald Fraser,E q, one whom we hed known from our childncod as an uptig.t citizen, a loving father, and a genial and kind-hearted friend. Be it Therefore Resolved, That we, the members of Kastern Gem Lodge feel deeply the great sorrow which has come to ocr sister, Bessie Fraser, and to other members of this Lodge, and we hope and pray that io their great bereavement they may be consoled by the thought that the departed has gone to meet his reward for @ faithful aod exemplary christian life and that the bereaved may be strengthen- ed and comforted by Him who has pro~ mised to be a protecter to the widow and a father to the fatherless.
