CHARLOTTETOWN AUGUST 18. 1950 Well. the mid-week Wednesday afternoon and evening Old Home Racing programmes were everything that was anticipated and more, when the day's events were witnessed by a total estimated attendance that almost reached the 14,000 mark. over six thousand crowding the grandstand, bleachers and grounds in the afternoon, with better than a thousand more exceeding that mark in the evening. 0 I C it was stair-studded racing that the thousands of rabid racing fans witnessed too. with torrid track battles being enacted to bring about programs that were sprinkled with upsets in the afternoon and was full of them in the evening when non-favourites came through to out-trot and out-pace many fav- ored entries to the finish wire and make it a field day for lucky bet- tors. . O O Unequalled in the history of the Province's harness horse racing sport, the unbelievable sum at 31,443.30 was the winning receipts paid to the only 02 ticket holder of the Miss Judy Dale-Josedale Hoos- ier daily double combination in the night racing meet. The winner was Mr. Hugh MacDonald of Charlotte- town. a veteran of World War II. and like a veteran. never turned a hair over me exciement of having the huge amount presented to him by cheque. when Commander G. 1!. Secretary of the Provincial Exhibition Association, made it an official and public pre- sentation from the judges stand. 0 I 0 But over and above the keen rac- ing and excitement that has feat- ured the week-long meet so far. there is another important feature that has made the program such a huge success. It is the fine work of the judges and officials who carry the full responsibility of the meet, and the excellent work being car- ried out by the marshalls O O D As all fans know, who attend the racing, each and every event is marshalled before the grandstand at the stairt of every race and is then taken in the same manner up be- hind thc starting gate. The two young ladies who have been carry- ing out this job so efficiently are Miss Helen Jones. daughter of Prunier J. Walter Jones, and Miss Evelyn Henry of Southport. Both of these ladies are excellent horse- womcn. and riding beautiful mounts have been carrying out their dutiu to the letter without a hitch. It is a colorful part of the program and one that both Miss Jones and Miss Henry enhance with their appearance. grace and per- formance. O O D And speaking of the judges and officials. well there just isn't any argument there. they are the best. Presiding judge and announcer. Dr. 1". O. The calibre ofraclng also reach- ed the pinniclc of entertainment and outstanding racing when fol- lowing the top - notch card on the matinee program that pro- duced winniiig times down to the 2:09 mark, the evening perform- ance was no less in the way of excitement although the times were a bit slower in keeping with the classes that were featured.
