WAsHINGToN, March 9.-When his attention was called to the statement coming from Vancouver to the effect that Admiral Dewey is breaking down and cannot ‘last a month longer, Secre- tary Long had no information whatever on this point. The stories of the admiral’s ill-health have been in circulation with more or less persistency for the last four monthst They are all traceable to private re- ports, and though oiiicers of the navy who have returned recently from Man- ila state that Dewe5’s health so far as it could be gauged from his appearance, appears to be about the same as it has been for the past year, they agree that the private rep arts probably have a fair basis of fact. It is not denied by these oili-:ers that the admiral has aged in his appearance; notably within thefpast year; his hair is undoubtedly whiter and his figure shows signs of that wveakness which might be expected to come with advanc- ing years. Dewey will be 62 years old next De- cember. and for many years had not been a stron man h sicall . Mean g P Y Y ' time he has had imposed upon him the most severe and exacting duties. so that it is but natural that his frail physique should show the effects ofthe tremen- dous strain. It is said by persons familiar with the Philippine climate that the second year Dewey soon' will begin his second year there. ln addition to this he labors under the drawback of having undergone a most severe sur ical o eration for the liver in tue Philippines ot all places. These iacts lead naval oilicers to believe reports that Dewey is showing signs of physical strain. On the other hand, as already stated, there is ab- solutely no oilicial evidence on file at the department to show that this, is true. The full medical history or Admiral Dewey is Tamong -the records of the bereau of medicine and sur er . experienced sience he has been in the navy, as well as the results of the physical examinations he had under- gone when he has been promoted from. time to time. - The admiral has not been the subject of a sick report since he went to Manila. Some time ago the President feared that the great. strain he was under might overtax him, so he cabled Dewey, through Secretary Long. permission to the United States. The admiral declined to avail himself saying that in his 'opinion duty required that he should finish the task he had begun at Manila. The President accepted this statement and Dewey remains by his own wish. He is free to return to the United States whenever he fares to do so, and the department will relieve him by cabled orders., In that case Captain N. H. Dyer. the commander ot the Baltimore, who is the senior captain on the Asiatic station, would have command of the American squadron temporarily. and probably would be relieved later by one oi the rear admirals recently created nearlv all oi whom are anxious to Aguina|do’s Headquarters to -he Attacked.
