The Montreal Herald supplies' some Olli- cial figures which are of _value in a.ns\\‘ei'ing the question. As is well known, cotions, vroollens, linens, worstcds, carpets, ha.be_rdashery, chiiiaware and tin plates are great staple British nianufactures. \Vha.t has been the general volume of Brit-ish trade in these articles with the world and with Canada during the first month that the preferential tariif has been in full operation, as compared with the like month last year? The British trade returns for July show that the total export of cottons of all kinds was 134,861,852, _ as com- pared with £-£689,452 in July of last year, a gain of about 6 per cent-. =How was it with exports of cotton goods to Cana'ia'l In July of last £60,454 and in the same month this _yeae£l09,4l1. This shows a. gain of S0 per cent. In linen goods the total of British exports to all countries showed a. A falling od' of 20 per cent while in the exports to Canada there was a. clear . gain of 60 per cent. In woollen ex- ports the total trade to all countries showed a. diminution of about 7 per fcent.
