F. S. A new invention connected with sub- marine telegraphy is about to startle the world. One of its chief features 1s a submarine repeater inclosed in a bronze globe to he sunk in mid-ecean, and which will havea capacity for re- sisting the action of salt, for, if you please, one thousand years. Longer cables, and rapid asd cheap transinis- sion are among the results anticipated. Ruskin bas just written: — ‘Make your children happy in their youth ; let distinction come to them, if it will, after well spent and well remembered years ;) but lei them now break and eat the bread of Heaven with gladness and singleness of heart and sead portions te them for whom nothing is prepared, and so Heaven send yeu its grace, be~ fore meat and after it.’ The ‘armers and cattle shippers ef Ontario are ljearning a lesson which farmers and cattle shippers in the Maritime Provinces should lay to heart. They are being taught by heavy lesses that it dees net pay to send inferior animals in inferior condition to the British cattle market. It seems difficult to foree the truth upon the inner con- sciousness of the parties concerned. Property left to a child may seon be jost; but the inheritance of virtue—a ood name, an unblemished reputation —will abide for ever. If those who are toiliag for wealth to leave thoir chil- dren would take half the paias to ses eure for them virtuous habits, how much more serviceable would they be. The largest property may be wrested from a child, dut virtue will stand by to the last. The Scottish journals refer in glowing terms te the gallant deeds performed by the Highland regiments in Afghan istan, the 92nd and 72nd, in which their old-time coolness, courage and sense of duty overcame superior numbers, and cempelled the defeated Afghans to ac- knowledge once more the prowess of British arms. Notwithstanding the re- sistance of the enemy. Highland cour- age was invincible, and the Afghan ranks were ultimately shattered by the advance of those memorable regiments who so nobly sustained their historic glorivs. Beautiful it is to die for our country, beautiful it is te surrender life for the cause of religious freedom ; beautiful to go forth, to bear help and healing to the sick, the wounded, the outcast and forlorn; but there are those who stay at home, alone, unknewn, uncelebrated, te do and bear more than is ever done in one brief act of heroism or hour of martyrdem. in ten thousand homes are those whose lifeslong care and anxiety wear and waste them to the grave. They count it ne praise; they consider it no sacrifice. 1 speak not but for the simple truth of that which is to me too holy fer eulogy.— Orville Dewey. The Detroit Tribune gives the follew- ing description of a new sort of barrels. The body of the barrel is all made in one piece, frem coarse wood pulp. The pressure to which it is subjected is 400 tons. The heads are made of one piece in the same way, and when put together the barrels are exceedingly light, strong, and satisfactery in every way. There are (wo kinds. One for fruit, flour, and ether dry substances ; the other for oil, lard and liquids of all kinds. A flour barvel made in this way and filled can be dropped from a wagon te the paves ment without injury. Fruit packed in these receptacles keeps longer than when put up in the usual way, being dry and excluded frem the air. The barrels for liquid substances ure made by subjecting the first form to a simple process, and oil can be keptin them witieut any leakage.
