The Cadre, January 27, 1976,-page 8 Hockey Win , Against. Aca r 1 lock tall: I! l'ck‘oy Place Having watched on T.V., the most exciting George Foreman/Ron Lyle fight in which every blow-landed, we think we may be excused‘ for wondering, during the first couple of minutes in the Panther-Acadia hockey game was transposed to this fight, as the first real shots on goal scored.‘ Bicknell scored for the Axemen on a deflection after forty seconds of play and our Ray O'Donnell evened it up a half a minute later. Glen Singleton made it 2—1 after another forty seconds only to have Lennie Kelly (who travelled in high gear, throughtout) made it 2—2 ‘twenty—five seconds later. Four goals in the first‘ 135 seconds! Bob Gray who came in a couple of minutes later saw the scoreboard and thought that he had missed the first period. After this the goaltenders put on a fine display of their unques— tioned skill. There was no more scoring during the fir- st period and Lennie Kelly got the only goal of the second stanza. In the thrid Dave Murna— ghan and Wayne Bernard got singles in the third while Lennie was scoring his third of the night. Dave Harpin got their only third marker, making the end come at 6—3 for us. Snags McInnis in our nets played well although not overextended while A1 Hume in the Acadia goal must have violated some sort of goalkeeper's union rules as he faced no less than 56 shots, many from close range. The crowd was disappoint— ing in both size and volume of sound. U.P.E.I. support used to be terrific...both in sound and size...in this game our comment might be that we have attended nois— ier funerals. It is hard to expect a team to play well when its own fans do not ex— _‘presslan interest in it. The ._..r-- , Panthers are presently in ' third place and are no cinch for that much-sought after- play—off spot. Tied with St. F.X. they are just behind’ Mount A. and just ahead of Moncton...but both these teams have two games ahead with lowly Memorial...which should give them four points each. X beat us by four goals here so we would have to beat them by five in Ant— igonish to get“the placing advantage over them in‘the case of a year—end tie. A tough assignment. Next home action is aga—u inst Dalhousie in the Forum you Sunday. The team travels to Moncton on Friday night. For fear of incurring Bruce' Macdonald's ire (he wants 'you to be at the Carnival 'Ba11 that night) we won't urge you to go to this one but if enough students go to Jane MbCormac in the Student Union office with four doll- ars by Friday noon the Stu— dent Union will sponser a bus for the Mount A. game next Tuesday. Remember the second place Mounties are a team we must beat if we ex- pect to make the grade. For an analysis of the cost, we'll give you the figures, Bus travel 146 miles @35¢ a mile comes to $51.10, return fares for passengers on the ferry @$1.30, for $52.00, fares for bus $10.00, driver's wages 8 hours @ $5.50 for $44.00 and two campus policemen have agreed to go along at the low wage of $15.00 total. This comes to an aggregate of $172.10 and 40 students at $4.00 would give a loss of $12.10. We've talked this over Trea— surer Ray Shalala who agrees ‘that this woudl present no difficulty. Other trips some have hitch-hiked to events and free-loaded back at ot—~ her's expense. If this trip goes only ticket—holders back from Sackville would be a dim prospECt at 10:30 on a cold night! Remember, for Vnews that our Pantherettes d-ia; Basketballérs , Lo'se Weekend. \ Series your own enjoyment and as a' _shdw of support for,our Pan- ther Hockey Team get your ’ money...on1y $4,00...to Jane, by Friday noon! In Ladies' Basketball we thought we had made complete arrangements for news but -our wandering correspondent must have encountered some of the Valley Cider so we have to pass along a bit of now have a 2—6 won—loss re- cord after succumbing 42—29- to Acadia and 71—48 to Dal- housie. This piece of infor— mation was gleaned from the scant attention paid by our friends to them during the. basketball broadcast. How is ' that for scratching and bit- ing at our friends? It is ; ‘just that the girls gave me so much criticism (valid I'll concede) that we are anxious to share our opprobrium... when adequate coverage is not extended to their activ— ities. Next action will see . Acadia here next Saturday. In men's Basketball, our Panthers had a rough weekend as they travelled to Acadia and sustained a 88-67 loss on Saturday night. Due to the hockey game; we were un— able to listen to this broad— castkand, although some ref— erenCe was made to this game I -\ in the Sunday broadcast, we were unable to understand the comments as the lines 'during the early part of th broadcast were anything BUt intelligible. J We understand that thiS was no fault of CIMN so, Mu Hennessey, don't come chass' ing us as you have our gym~ ’pathy, not our blame. The latter part of the game is ‘ being played’as this‘is-bg_ ing written and reception R _ 0.K. except that'the-ga'n'noum cer, Gary Dunning, is for- ever reporting SMU's'scores and nOt enough of our own, ~The game ended 96-79 for mm Art Laffin was our high scorer at 19 points follow“ by Tom Hibbert with 14. For our bright side of the news, we'll comment thn we admired Coach Gary Heam when he said on a Friday night broadcast somethingto the effect that he'd be sag iSfied with a split. Hope you're not too diSappointw Gary.-.we know that, in aw game you're teams lose, n won't be for lack of effom nor want of enthusiaSm. Next Basketball action will be at 2500 pm nextSab urday afternoon with Acadm visiting us for a game whhh looms large in our play—OH ambitions. - '
