Charlottetown, Feb. 24, 1896—dy _ . ~~ EDINBURGH BY LIME LIGHT, sided There was a profitable and pleasureable mingling of history, literature and art in Mr. Bartlett’s lecture on Edinburgh, illus- trated by means of Mr. Haszar i’3 stere Op- tican. The Old Town and the New Town from the Cz — to the Infirmary, were por- trayed by word and in limeli; ght. Records of Scotlard’s picturesque capital city, in all the ages, in stone and brick, together with those great features of nature which be ong toit, were bronght before the large and high ly intelligent audience assem\) led in St. James’ Ball last evening. Every memberzof the Bx var 1 was in his place. Mayor Dawson exp! ained the object for which the meet ing was called, and e xpressed his pleas ure at meeting the members of the Board in council. The proclamation announcing the civic e lection was then read by the clerk, who contest. The appointment of the usual standing commi ittees was then proceeded with. The result follows :— Finance Committee—Nichelson, Douse and Looper. Street Committee--Hughes, Jolinson, Taylor, McCarron, Douse. Market Committee—Taylor, Johnson and Hooper. Tender and Public Property Committee —McCarron, Horne and Johnson. Trucks and Carriages Committee— : Horne, McCarron and Hughes Fire Department Committee—Nichol- The first event on the racing pro- gramme was contested by Beer, Lea (of Crapand) and Chappelle. The distance was one mile. Beer won by about three- quarters of a lap in 4.25. Lee and Chap- pelle both fell during the race and Jost ground in consequence. The skaters in the one-mile profes sional race were Howatt and Hogan, of Charlottetown, and Moore, of Crapaud. Howatt took the lead at the start, with Hozan second and Moore third. Moore soon passed Hogan, but failed to over- hanl Howatt whe came in the winner by about a third of a lap, with Hogan some distance b ck. Time 3.49} Gaudet and Cannon comested the one mile amateur race for a medal and the cl ampionship of the Province. They kept about e en until the fourth lap when Gaudet began to forge ahead. Can- non tried hard to even matters again, but the Charlottetown boy was v0 speedy and at the finish had a quarter of a lap to spare. Time, The contestants in the three-mile pro fessional race were Howatt, Moore and Hogan. Moore took the lead at the start and cut out a sherp pace. But Howatt held Moore well, and on the fifth lap passed him and held the Jead to the fin ish, ecming in a winner by almost a lap and a haf Eo.an Was third. Time 11 553. Fetween the first anil secoud races “Jimmy” Walliams and Johnny Dewar skated a half mile race. “Jimmy” had the most speed, and finished a winner in 2.10. The graceful 9913 YOlG- skating ef Howatt and Gaudet was much admired, and at the close of the races in which they were competitors they were enthusiastically “bounced.” Moore and Cannon each pu up a good race, but they went up against more speedy men and the races went the other way. There was considerabie dis- ap pointment over Rattray’s not compei- ing. But he was not in good form, and did not feel like taking part. He will pro- bab'y be heard from later. The hockey match was characterized by the best of feeling between the players. [he Abogwe its put up a lively game, and the visitors did very well all things con- sidered. With increased practice they ill become more familiar with the intri- eacies of hockey, and the returu match will more closely coutested than that of last evening. Galbraith’s Band furnished choice music during the evening. The managers of the rink once demonstrated the:r ability to furnish good robab'v be more entertainment, aud they are to be con- gratulated. B. Y..P, U. CONCERT. Although last evening furnished many sunter attractions a good audience assem bled in the Philharmonic Hall on the oc- casion of the B. Y. P. U. concert. An entertaining programme was presented in the goal style of the performers. Ihe p'ano solos by Miss Bremner and Miss McLean were excellently rendered and well received. The readings by Misses Rattray, Howard, MeKenzie and Stenti- ford and Rev. C. W. Corey were well sel- ected and splendidly given. Of such a | known favorite as Prof. Vinnicombe it is unnecessary to speak except to say that his violin solos were up to his usual high standard. The vocal soloists were Misses Anderson, Nicholson, McKay and Benoit, and Mr. Frank Trainor. The rendition of their several numbers was splendid. Mr. Major Galbraith’s cornet solo was well played. The last number was the male qnartette -by Messrs. Bruze Lewis, Cook and Trainor. Altozether the concert afforded a> evening of rare enjoy- ment, and the committee of nianagement are to be congratuleted, Before the United States Senate agrees to the Behring Sea Convention, it seems likely that an amendment will be made, regarding possible claims against Canada and Great Britain to be considered, as well as the British claims agaiust the United States. This will cause such delay as wi!l be necessary to secure the consent of the principals to the change.
