I - Noriceable Decrease In Unemployment Payments, Figures available at the Char- lottetown National Employment Office yesterday show the numbe of people drawing the uneilnglloy ment insurance benefits in g's and Queen's Counties has decreas- ed noticeably in the past three weeks. On March 10 more than 2500 people were drawing bene- fits in the two counties. of whom 917 were residents of Charlotte- town and vicinity. Yesterday. this total stood at 2216 for the two counties. and of these. 788 are liv- ing in Charlottetown and outskirts. This shows a drop of over 300. all told. 129 in Charlottetown alone. A considerable number of pie have returned to work but some of who have been dropped from the benefit rolls are not yet employed. On the whole. the Char- lottetown National Employment Office reports I brightening em- ployment picture. and it is Pf? dicted that if the weather is at all favourable. many men will return to work in the next few weeks. The construction outlook is es- pecially favourable with the build- ing of private homes expected to be larger than in some years. The work on the Federal Building is reaching the stage where many more men will be employed than at present. and now that ground has been broken on the new Guardian Office Building. it too will take up some of the slack in cmploymcnt. Several new service stations will be started and built quite early in the year including one on the corner of Grafton and Prince Streets. The Maritime lilot-tric Company is extending it's plant facilities in the east end of tho city at a cost of sl00.000. It is not known yet whether the Consumer's Co-operative Store on Queen Street will make an early start on its plans to expand pres- ent noor space. It is understood that the Co-op owna consider-biz proparw to the rear of its present quarters. on Richmond Street lust around a corner from Lumber dealers have noted that many people are arranging to build new homes. so many in fact, that one dealer at least has pre- dlctcdahanneryearinthistype of construction. Aside altogether from the very encouraging outlook in construct- ion. many men who have been seasonally idle will soon return to their usual summer Jobs in April. This includes many who were am- Eloyed on dr ea. tow boats and y the Marina ranch of the De- partment of Transport. in various positions. Sarvice stations throughout the city which for. the most part re- duced their staff: during the win- ter months, will soon be taking on men for summer work. and the garage: are becoming quite active on more. Painter: and decorators are not plentiful even at this date. and this class of tradesmen will be busier than over when. citizens start to clean up and paint up for Centennial year. Merchants who carry paint supplies have , reported an upswing in s.-'--. Down in Sourls. mar the draggers are ready to sea. and some may have I .- y com- menced their first trip . the fish- ing grouds. Several captains had planned to make the first sally out of Souris on or about April 1st. but it is not known whether any boats put out yesterday. It the boats begin land- ing fish this early in the year, it will mean the return to work of a large number of people who live in Sourls and vicinity. Hockey Tonight Af Montague ..rWith the doors of the Monta- gue Rink' heduled to close for the season tonight. rink manager Wilfred Watterworth has lined up a solid evening of hockey enter- tainment as a fitting climax to one of the most successful sea- sons in a good number of years. The feature of the evening will be the return engagement be- tween the Montague Primroses and the Southern Kings All-Stars. These two teams played last week to a sell out crowd who were treated to an exciting game. The Primroses won that game on the strength of the third period scoring splurge. but up until that time they had their hands full with the hustling All-Stars. The All-Stars will be strengthened for tonight's game. and on the basis of their last showing it would be no surprise if they should upset the Primroses applecart. Also on the program will be a game between Murray Harbor North and the Summerville Bea- vers. These two scrappy teams turned in a fast brand of hockey all season and will be anxious to end it with a win. In Memoriam ..'In loving mmemory of our dear Father and Mother. George T. Ca rd of Thanks We wish to express our sincere thanks to our kind friends who so generously helped us in many way: during both our illnesses. This has been an exceptionally busy week for various commit- tee: of the Prince Edward fsland Musical Futival Assocla” . The 1955 programme has been passed to the press for publlcati . The Membership Committee has just completed its largest list of group membership. and individual mem- bers since the organization began in 1946. It is very gratifying to all who give so much time voluntarily to the organization to know that more and more citizens realize the contribution the Festival has made to the educations and cul- tural life of our children and young people. With Easter just one week away we shall be privileged to listen to the beautiful and soul-stirring music of Bach, Handel, Stainer and other composers who have drawn on the passion and resur- rection of Our Lord for their masterpieces. The demand for these great works will increase or decline. depending on whether or not our children are taught to appreciate fine music now. The development of this appre- ciation is the purpose of the Musical Festival Association. You can help by joining the Associa- tion at the small fee of one dol- lar. Your institute. choir. cluh. ect., may join as a group. in which case the annual fee is five dollars. A group is entitled to ap- point five of its numbe as its representatives in the Association.
