Last week, with the pug. ing of flfteen-year-old Raymond Hennessey, Charlottetown lost one of it's most promising hopefuls, Ray spent a lot of his leisure time °" Ciiflnaught playground and there his presence is especially missed by young and old alike. Rays contagious smile and active interest in’ sports and peo le en- ‘dcared him to many, and a though he has gone in person from our midst, his spirit and fine qualities will remain for years in the lives of his friends. An accident in which he was involved a few years previous, might have pre- vented a less energetic lad than himself fromi participating in rug- ged sports, but it did not deter Ray, and he continued to play ball and hockey, etc, with the best of thcm—he was one of the best of them. A large crowd of adults and children were at Brighton Beach on Friday. July 29th to witness the Playground swimming meet. How- eer, due to the choppy water, it was impossible to get many ent- rants wlio were ivilling to take the chance, and only a few of the long list of events were run off. Miss Frances Johnson, from the Arts and Crafts Guild, is quite pleased with the attendance at the classes. which she has been hold- ing on the square, and with the fine work that is being done by the children. Next week the chil- drcn. on all squares, will get a chance to make some fancy head- gear for themselves out of paper plates, ribbons, paints. etc. That sounds like a lot of fun so anyone who has not attended the classes on the squares as yet. try to make it a point to be at the next one: Monday, King Square; Wednesday. Negotiations are under way to have the All-Star team, composed of Hlllshorough and Connaught players. face l squad from some other part of the Island on Sunday next, Those girls are not letting any grass grow under their feet on the softball diamond. and they are going to attempt to keep the weeds down on tho volleyball courts also, by entering a volleyball league made up of the two squares and possib- ly a team from the Charlottetown Hospital Nurses‘ Home and a team from the Knights of Columbus. A group of young girls from Hillsboroiigh Square set out on a hike to Dickerson‘s Shore on Thursday last and by all reports it wasn't a "dry" time. A heavy shower of rain in mid-afternoon forced them to wend their weary way homeward afoot. and despite s complete drenching they had s pretty fair day. Enthusiasm is running high over the beginning of a Daperweish? ball league composed of boys 'i-11 on Hillsborough and Connausht Squares. I O At ten o‘clock on Friday morn- ing, July 22nd, a group of inter- ested parents gathered at the swimming beach at East Royalty to watch the members of the Red Cross swimming and water safety class go through the various tests. A unique feature about this class is the fact that two of the members, twins, have ridden to and from the lessons each day .on their horses. It is indeed unusual to have two ten-year-old pupils who are such adept riders and it added a note of real sportsman- ship to Friday's program when at the conclusion of the tests each of class will be tested later‘ on in the season. The following members received certificates and insignia:— Elementary Class: Douglas Park- man. Hclen McKinnon, Norma Holmes. Douglas Miller, Carol Far- quharson.
