They knew, for instancc» that there were large quantit'i»:s of brick clay in the pro- vince. knew that bricks were manufactt_\red in a small way in some localities, but they knew also that large quantities of bricks were being imported yearly, and. theiy therefore concliidcd, that the manufacture of bricks in this province was an unprofitable speculation- and they werc_content to let the matter renia.in there; The Development Commission has already demonstra- ted to them that our clay deposits are very rich, suit-< able for the manufacture of art pottery, a business; that can be made very lucrative and that may be de- veloped iiito an industry employing a great many men and women. They have been shown also that even the manufacture of bricks and drainage tiles can be carried on as successfully here as anywhere else in the world and that iflready a number of local capitalists have invested their money in the industry and that as a re- sult the province will no longybe subject to the waste- fuliiess and the dis'gracc of importing what we have the raw material and the labour to nianufacturc for our-`. selves, i Our people knew that strawberries could be grown; here but they did not realize that six acres under straw-If berries could he made more profitable than a hmidredf' acres worked as most of our acres are worked at pre- sent. The Dcvclopineiit Commission succeeded iii placing the information lin a most practical way before our people and we have no doubt the result will be a great derclopnient in this one industry alone. The people kne\v, in a vague \vay, that our schools with :ill their good qualities, might be still further im- proved- that the consolidation of coiitigiioits schools. ought to be an advantage and a iiieaiis of economi- zing and improving the schools, The matter was set forth very clearly by Rev. Dr. Gauthier in a report which we publish in'this issue. Iniinigration, the canning of small fruits- toyniakiiig etc were all touched. upon in a practical way and the possibilities in each case clearly and intelligently set forth. The men \vho "_niad¢fin__§_i`rlameii¢ by Mr. Pfjwere calculated to impress tllc whether Mr_,Kyte knew the He had possession of certain documents and imore rumors and he proceeded to build up a case against his political opponents. He was reckless mis-statements because he was eager for political ad- vantage. He believed the Government would not an invest' tion and he over-reached himself. Mr, Kyte deliberately conveyed the impression that they were to be financed principally by advances from the Committee. Either he knew better and was dislioncsb or he did not know better and acted on the principle that too much investigation may spoil a perfectly good scandal, Mr. Kyte said in the House in reference to the American Ammunition Company: “The Shell.
