CHARLOTTETOWN JULY 6. 1950 The weather man continued to cast his damp spell ovcr racing enthusiasts again yesterday. to cause the fourth rainout or partial postponmcnt. to afternoon race meetings in the past week. But he used a rather unique way of doing it yesterday at Montague. Starting out under a blue and almost cloudlcss sky. the first heat had no more than been completed when a bank of dark clouds start- ed to creep up over the area. and by the time the horses were out on the track for the second race. a light shower commenced to fali.1 . i 1 But things still looked hopci'ul.1 and most everyone was expecting it to clear again with nothing morei than a slight dampening. and the: races were continued under light. intermittent showers. that ncvt-r lessened the iniercsi. of the large crowd present. By the time the fourth heat was out. however. the clouds got darker and denser and the rain got heavier. to turn into a complete downpour by the time the horses came to the track for the fifth. It proved too much for the fans. who were diving for cover from all points, and it was certainly too much for the horses and drivers. who were sent to the barns by the judges. when the track was turned into an unilt condition for safe racing by the downpour. C 0 The odd part of the whole situat- ion. however, is the fact that out- side ihe immediate Montague arca. no rain fell. and fifteen or twenty minutes after the races were call- ed off. the sun was shining over the track again. without any hint of further rain. On the return trip back to Charlottetown. it was found that there had been no rain in areas within five or six miles of Montague. To tell anybody in this City who hadn't attended the meet. that it had b,ecn,rain.(3d 9'”- was to invite a look of disbelief that would question the speaker'sp sanity. And no wonder. Char- lotietown. just 30 miles or so away was bathed in sunshine all day. 0 O C The Charlottetown Altfoics broke into the win column of island Physlcnl Fitness Baseball League play over Memorial Field last night. when they clipped a 5-2 ver- dict from the Summerslde R..C.A.F. Royals in the first meeting between the two teams this season. It was the fourth start for the Abibles in scheduled play. who still remain in the cellar position of the (our- team loop. 0 0 At the same time at the western Capital. the Curran and Briggs nine chalked up their fourth straight victory to keep their win streak in scheduled play this sea- son intact. The C and B boys scored their win at the expense of Ment's Falcons from this City in a 4-3 tussle. The results of yester- day's games leaves the C and B squad on the top rung of the league race by two games over second- place Falcons. while R. C. A. F. and Aibbies share the cellar with one win and three losses each. All teams have played four scheduled gamm. . O 0 0 The Abbies will travel to Sum- fnerside this alterrioun where they will meet the R. C. A. F. Royaleinl I postponed game. The tilt was) scheduled for the Western centre. on June 28th but was rained cut.
