Some years ago ia Georgia, that band of Christians known as Ascension- ista were having a grand revival. One aay when the meeting WAS ID full force, astorm came up,and a young gentle man who hunting with hi servant took refuge in the church doo Being curious to see the service, the two hunters crept up into the gallery, and there hid ina pisee where they could observe without being observed, ‘Come, Lord, come ybesare ready, Come, Lord, come,’ cried the preacher, while all present gave a oud ‘Amen.’ ‘Mar- sa Gabe,’ whispered Cuffy, lifting bis huntinyg-horn ' mouth, tiet me gib dem jist one toot.’ Put that hora down, | or lil break your head,’ master in a whisper. Blow, Gabriel, | blow,’ pleaded minister. Cuffy could no longer resist the temptation, and sent a peal ringing from end to end | ofthe church; but long before its ‘ast echo 1 away, his master and himsel!| Were the only occupants of the build-| ing. ‘I’s ready for de marss | Gabe,’ said Cuily, showing every tooth} in his head, for | vyracious it’s wort two lickings to see de way com-| mon farm cattle kin git ober de grout d 1 sk { aseensionists bebind dem.’ Wid sxeare + [yndall on Rainbows. Whatever the ultimate cause of a1 ght} have been, the proximate Was physical, and the aim of science was to refer a rainbow to its physical princi ples. The explanation of the rainbow was due to Descartes. Descartes looked at the drops of rain; he pictured on a ainbow m “rt CAauUuso0 liquid sphere falling in the air; he pictured the rays of the sun falling upon a liquid sphere ; he saw that cer- tain portions of the light would be re- fracted, would be driven to the other side of the drop, back again, and would be again refracted on their emergence | from the drop. He took a penin his hand and calculated the entire course of the reys through the drop and their direction after their emergence from the drop. Ile found that the vast body of the rays, after quitting the drop, diverged at one particular angle ; they came out as a paralied sheaf. There was a certain form of emotion called intellectual pleasure. It might be caused by poetry, literature, nature or art, but he (Prof Tyndall) doubted whether there wasa pleasure of thé intellect more pure and concentrated than that ofa scientific man, who look- iog ata difficulty that had challenged the human mind for ages, saw that difficulty melt before his eyes and recrystallize as an illustration of a Jaw of nature. Such pleasure, he thought, must have been thac of Descartes when he succeeded in uncovering the laws which ruled the appearance of the most brilliant meteor in nature. ~-_- OO Business in the Northwest. ) The wonderful growth in the popula. tion and business industries of the Northwest strikingiy illustrated in sta- tistics just published touching the growth of St. Paul, Minnesota, by the Chamber of Commerce of the city. The population of St. Paul in 1850 was 840, in 1860, 10,600; in 1870, 20,300; in 1883 100.000. In 1883 the amount expend- ed in new buildings was $11,938,950. being surpassed in amount only by three cities, New York, Cincinnati, and Chicago. The wholesale trade increas- ed from $9,813,000 in 1870 to $81.000.- 000 in 1583, the increase of first-class jobbing houses being 33 per cent, over 1882. In 1870, the manufacturing establishments numbered 88, with 985 employes, and products valued at $1,- 611,378; in 1883, there were 751 manu- facturing establishments, with 17,000 eniployes, and the product is estimate: at $33,009,000. In 1870, the banking capital was $900,000; in 1883, it was 5,500,000. Tiese figures make good the claim that St. Paulis becoming a formidable competitor of Chicago. ear Special Notices. ote ee | scales repaire — es er THE £ CoLWILL is selling off Crockery very cheap to make room for u w goods, fml0O whly, Every part of » gun ora sewing machine made at Brown's si >p, on corner of Prince and Grafton Street, Ch iown, [jan26 wkly.
