The evidence of Provincial Police
Officer Jay containing the alleged
confession of Otto Curtis, now on
trial for manslaughter in the Su-
preme Court before Mr. Justice
Saunders and s. jury, was hoard
at the trial ofthe accused yes- I
terday. According to the evidencei
Curtis stated (hat he saw an object`
on the road from n distance of about
seventy-five yards. When about thir-
ty fset from the object he realized
that it was a man, but was unable to
stop.
Donald D. McDonald, Shamrock,
fu-mer, remembered that on the
evening of Nov. 15 he saw _a. horse
and wagon on the west side of the
road as he went to Bradalbane. I-ie
did not see the prisoner around that
evening.

day dcclded to issue adecree order-
ing special certificates for all for-
eign whcat entering France. The
decree resulted from allegations that
foreign wheat has been entering
France in excess of the official quo-
ta, which last ycar was fixed at 10
percent of the total wheat necessary
for consumption in France. This(
year‘s quote has not yet been !ixed.i
Great wheat producing countries,
notably Canada and the U. S. and
also the Argentine are deeply inter-
ested in knowing liow much wheat
they will be permitted to sell in
Fraiice. All wheat arriving at
French ports must be entered by
Government agencies before delivery
to the consignee.

Dr. A. E. Steele, past/Jr emeritus oi'
First Baptist Church here, and wide-
ly known denominational leader, died
at his home today in his ninety-third
year. His illness was brief. Dr.
Steele, li native of Hertfordshire, Eng-
land, came out to Canada in 1845
and after serving his apprenticeship
as a printer in Halifax, entered tha
ministry, graduating from Acadia in
1965. After two years at Camo, ha

for 20 years. He was formerly li.
