Hawks went in front with the only goal of the first period and stayed there. adding a pair in the second as Beavers shot one and splitting agpair in the third period. Tommy Brennan of Beavers pro- vided the fireworks for the even- ing. collecting an automatic 535 in fines by drawing a misconduct and match misconduct in the second period when he stepped into referee Cy Taylor and then went into the ul'0ll'd after a tnrmentor. -He was followed into the box seats by some of his teammates. and the cooler-headed customers and players were busy trying to aid police to restore order. Dennis Brodeaur in the Saint John cage was kept busy, especi- ally in the first and third periods and he robbed llawks of several chances to increase their edge by his bl'llll.'.lll. saves. After ending the first period in a l-i deadlock, they played to a roaring scoreless second session and ham- mered away at one another for 16 minutes of the third period be- fore the tie was broken. At that point Bill Diguar got the winning goal for Saints, while Hughic Campbell fired home the insurance marker with only two seconds left in the game. It gave the Hangou- ians their first victory over is- landers since January lith, which was also played over Halifax ice. and their fourth win over them snis season. 0 0 It was a game tha-t packed every- thing in the way of smart hockey. that saw both goalies D'Aoust of Halifax and Gordon of Islanders come up with some outstanding saves during the nights play to frustrate many dangerous scoring iefforis by attacking forwards. The final one would have been the tie-break- ing tally when Walter Panvlyshyii scored on a. nice solo effort in the third frame. The play took place at the same time that Vitale and Myketyn decided to mix it, caus- ing the play to be -blown down and the goal disallowed. The other dis- allowed tally was earlier in the game when the goal was scored while an Islanders player was in- side the goal crease. O O U Thirteen penalties were handed out during the uiigih-powered bat- tle, eight of the awards going to the Islanders while the other five were picked up -by Halifax. All were for minor vinilractions except the majors going to the t-wo big rearguards for their third period outbreak.
