DAILY KXAMINER THE JANUARY 29, 1883. Editorial Notes. —The United Senate amended the ‘Tariff Bill’ by putting lumber ou the list.”’ Should the amendment be adopted, we presume that the Dominion Government will follow avit and place lumber on the ‘free list.’ Thev we shall at last have reciprocity in | the lumber trade. States have . free —All good men. more particularly all good Irishmen, will rejoice that the ‘*As- sassination Club” has been entrapped. lt appears that to the horrid infiuence of this assuciation was due the murder of the | Seerétaries, the murder of Cox the police man, the attempted murder of Field the jurymen, the scheme for the murder ot Judge Lawson, the plot to assassinate ex- Chief Secretary Forster and other high ofiicials. —His enemies will deny that the Pope has taken a sensible and Christian course with reference to theIrish diffienlty. [na letter to Car- dinal McCabe—copies of which have Been sent to all the Irish Bishops— he expre-ses his regret that evil societies have not ceased'to trust to deeds of but seek murders which lead to destruc- tion. A fuithful people, he says, should | be very careful that the nation al course | be kept distinct from the deeds of these unhallowed associations” i t hardly greatest | —In his reply to the address of the Catholic laity of Halitax, Archbishop O'Brien says :— : ‘Tam especially gratified at your pro- mise of support and assistance in helping me to discharge the many and onorous duties which wilifallto my lot. In unity there is strength, and if we be all united, then I shall not fear to undertake anything which may be neccesary for the good of religion in this Diocese. When the mo- ment arrives for dealing with the question of higher education for our Catholic youth, you will find me ready to act ; and if I then have your leyal co-operation ; all difficul ties will vanish, and a satisfactory settle ment will be «¢ ffected.” Archbishop O’Brien evidently means business. —The Montreal Star follows up its former announcement with one to the effect that a cable despatch has been received from London, trom Mr. George Stephen, to the Directors of the Company in Montreal, to the effect that the ordivary stock of the Canada Pacific Railway Company bad been floated on Saturday at Loudon and Amsterdam. According to the Star “the amount offered is understood to be unlimited, that is to say, that tenders were ‘tnade for more than the whole issue of the ordinary stock at sixty, but the amonnt accepted is believed only to cover the require- ments of the present year. The trausaction is considered by banking men to be « most _ satisfactory one, pot only to the enterprising gentle- men at the head of the largest under- taking ever contemplated and endorsed by the’ Domiuion, but also as affecting the general credit of the country at large, and proviug that despite the slanders of interested parties, not only here but also in Europe, the credit of Canada and its great traoscontioental route, is as good as ever in the money markets of Europe. A large amount is also taken up in New York, threngh Messrs. Boisserain Bros., of Amstei dam.” — . ee Incendiary Fire Yesterday morning, a one story house on the co ner of King aud Union streets, was des- troyed by fiee, togetier with the greater part of a two-story double tenement house along- side, gecupied by Mr. George Foster, black- emi:h, and Daniel Wright, rieger. Poth houses were owned by James Barrett, bloch- maker, and one—the doubie-tenement—was | ingured, The fire Was of incendiary origin. It was quickly distovered, and the alarm was giveu at aqnafter to three. Berlin despatches reiterate the oft-repeat- ed assertion that Germany is earnestly pre paring for war with her astern neighbor. Although diplomatic circles deny the trath of the statement, confidential reports fur- nished the Vatican by its egents affirm that a European war is inevitable. Returns of the Clyde ship-bnilding trade for 1882 show that year to have been one of great and unexampled activity. There was built a total of 291 vessels, of an aggre- gate tonnage of 391,034 tons, 2s against 262 vessels in 1581, representing an aggre- nage. therefore, was 50,902, as compared with an increase of 1€0,00@ tons the year before. Beginning with 1859, the following figures of tonnage for various years show the extraordiaary growth of this Clyde industry within less than one generation : 1859, 35.709 tons; 1862, 69,967; 1863, 23,262; 1864. 178,506; 1867, 188,014; 1869, 192.310; 1872, 230,347 ; 1874, 262,430 ; 1877, 169,710; 1878, 222,823; 1879, 174,- 750; 1880, 241,714; 1881, 341.012; and 1882 391,934 tons. According to a writer in the Atlantic Month/y for January the blacks in the South are not much better off under the flag of freedom than they were under the old regime of slavery. They are still whipped and scourged and occasional'y hunted with b’oodhounds when they show any restless ness under their masters, more politely known as ewployers The writer gelates an instance where a “‘colored brother’ saved himself from being torn to pieces by blood- hounds on his trail by taking to the railway track, facing an express train coming at full speed and jnmping the track in time to sive his own bacon, leaving the valuable dogs to be killed. The colored brother had more manliness than the scoundrel who placed the dogs on his tracks ; and, tell it not in Goth, he was formerly a Northern abolitionist. “~~ ae 2. ee Persona!—Gossip. Trotting Horses. To the Editor of the Examine?. My Dear Sir,--! read with pleasure the remarks in Toe EXaMinek anent trotting horses ; but allow me to say that you do not go half far enough in what you say. Trotting horses are a curse in this poverty stricken community, where everything, animate and inanimate, ought to be tested by the question cui bono? They lead to gambling, betting, dissipation, and conduct which, per se, goes, to a certain extent, to affurd a plea or excuse for that vilest of all humbugs, the Scott Act. I have recently had some dozen narrow escapes from being rum over in our streets, in despite of all my looking out from the mast- head, fore and aft. I would suggest that an Act be passed by our Civic Legislature, forbidding any person to drive in our streets at a rate exceeding six miles per hour, that the police have authority and orders to stop and arrest any sleigh, or waggon, driving at greater speed than six miles per hour; that if any rowdy driver resist arrest, that the police havé authority, and revolvers. to shoot the offending (though ¢ mparatively) innocent horse; the driver to be heavily fined, unless he can prove that the horse had taken the bit between his teeth and run away; or unless he, the driver, and two respectable householders with him, can be produced to swear that the speed was not exceeding six miles per hour. Lhe ‘‘silsby’” Company worked admirably on it, and would, doubt- | less, ave confined the flames to} the log house, had there not ‘been a window | in the attic of the double tenement. Through | this window the flames were communicated to | the interior of the donble-tenement. The firemen then were obliged to give all their attention to the larger building and the ones immediately surrounding it. They did their duty well, and succeeded in extinguishing the flames after the double-tenement house had been gutted, and the roof destroyed. Captain Hickey and the men under him, deserve great credit for their prompt action yesterday morning. It is the opinion of many that had not ‘‘Silsby’ engine commerced work in an incredibly short time the whole block would have been destroyed. **Rollo” engine was very unfortunate in the search for water. Her men were compelled to break a hole in the ice at the wharf: an act which materially delayed her working. After the fice, “‘Silsby” engine refilled the tank at McEachern’s from the railway pump. She forced the water through her own hose, up a heavy grade, and filled the tank in two hours avd a half. ‘his speaks well for ‘“‘Sil-by's” power and efficiency. The men at the engine hruses were busily engaged yest-rday. and when Chief Engineer | Large retired last night, he did so with the | knowledge that the engines and men under | him were ready to respond to another call, if | such were made. ~~) oe «+ « JouRNALISTIO.—The first issue of the North- ern Chronicle, published at Parreboro’, is at | lise paper has twenty eight weli filled | hand. columns, and will be issued weekiy.
