Last Monday morning the pil- grims who had made the annual visit to the shrine, under the direction ef the Redemptor- ist Fathers, returned to Montreal and brought with them Nellie McCarthy, a child 12 years old, who had been suffering from hip disease for five years. She could ouly get along with great difficulty by the use of crutehes. The crutches were left at St. Anne’s shrine among the thousand other mementos of like miracles, and the girl was as if she had never been troubled with the disease. In the election in Cumberland to-day for House of Commons, Dickey (Conservative) war elected by 762 majority over Casey, Pro aibition. ; The Boulanger-Floquet Duel. Panis, July 13. The duel between Prime Ministers Flo- quet and Boulanger was fought this morn- ing. The two gentlemen, attended by their seconds, met in the vicinity of Paris at 10 o'clock this morning. Swords were used and both contestants were wounded. The duel occurred on Count Dillon's estate at Newilly Sur-Seine, a short dis- tance from the city. General Boulanger was wounded in the arm and neck. His wounds are not dangerous. Floquet’s hand scratched by General Boulanger’s sword, Further than this he was not touched. Dr. Monod, who is attending Boulanger, has issued a bulletin regarding his condi- tion. Monrreat, July 13. The arbitrators in the case of Henry Judah vs. the Atlantic and Northwest Railway, have rendered their award, giving Mr. Judah $30,575. The Company offered $15,000 and Judah claimed $100,000. The kanks have come to an unanimous agreement to oppose Premier Mercier’s new commercial tax both tooth and nail, and will carry the matter, if needed, to the highest court in the Empire. — A Terrible Loss. Capetown, July 15. It is believed that three hundred lives were lost in the debris of the coal mine fire. The damage to the mine is estimated at $100,000. The calamity was caused by the breaking of the hauling wire while the shifts were being changed. The rescuers who subsequently explored the mine were compelled to use dynawite to clear the pas- sages to Corpses. Another Counterfeiter Arrested. Sarnia, Ont., July 18. W. O. Parsons, a prominent contractor, was arrested at Thedaford last night on a charge of counterfeiting. A large quantity of bogus bills and American silver was found on his person. He is said to be con- nected with a gang of counterfeiters oper- ating in that section. Serious Trouble Feared. Lonpon, July 158. One British regiment now in Egypt has been ordered to Zululand, and a detach- ment from Aldershot will replace it in Egypt. It is generally believed serious trouble will soon ensue in South Africa.
