BY SCOTT MACDONALD In what was undoubtedly one of the fastest awards banquets of all time, UPEI student athletes got their moment inthe sun. Last Tuesday night at the Charlottetown Hotel, the 25th annual varsity athletic honours night was a fast-paced success. The evening was a tribute to all those who have donned the green and white of the various UPEI varsity teams in the past year. The two top trophy winners of the evening were field hockey’s Kathie McNally and basketball’s Raham Dixon. McNally, a graduating science student, had her name mentioned many times over the course of the night as she took home prizes for being both the female athlete of the year and the winner of the prestigious Gordon and Murial Bennett award which goes to the student who best combines athletic achievement and academic excellence. McNally also took home not only the CIAU James Bayer Memorial scholarship, but also All-Canadian status in field hockey to go along with her Academic All-Canadian all-star award. If you thought that there must be something that she can’t do, think again, because she teaches Sunday school as well as planning for medical school next fall. Raham Dixon’s three years at UPEI have been ones of great personal success, but I know that he would trade it all for an AUAA title anda shot at playing in the CIAU's. Dixon, who came here after two years at FloridaA&M, has been the offensive focus of the Panthers basketball team for the past three years. He has been named All-AUAA first team twice;4 during his first year here at UPEI. Dixon also won the MVP for the Panthers b’ball team. Other multiple winners included Soccer’s Adrian Tompkins who captured the Offensive and Defensive player of the year, to go along with the MVP for the Varsity soccer team and the Mickey Place Student Union award. Tompkins was also named All- AUAA-- the only thing he didn’t win was a door prize, but if there had been one he would probably have captured that as well. Hockey’s K.J. White capped an excellent season with the Panthers as he took home an Al11-AUAA trophy to fill out his mantlepiece with his other awards, which included: Most Dedicated Hockey Player, Top Scorer, and hockey’s MVP. White was one of the most sportsmanlike members of the team this year, and gave 110% every night while he was on the shot McNally & Dixon capture top athlete awards UPEI Athletic Banquet review ice. ‘i Other team MVP’s include Field Hockey-Krista Munroe Women’s Soccer-Stella Teoli Volleyball-Kelly Colwill Women’s B’ball-Hillary Watson UPEI president C.W.J.
