We regret very much to announce the death of William Brown, Esq., of New Glasgow, at the age of sixty-six years, The last illness of the deceased gentleman was protracted and painful. He passed quietly away on Thursday, the 5th inst. Mr. Brown was a valuable member of the com- munity in which he resided, and was res- pected and esteemed by the people of the whole country-side. He was for many years past Justice of the Peace, and performed the duties in connection with that office, when it was a very important one ia the colony, in an upright and conscientious manner. An Elder of the Presbyterian Church, he, by his piety and upright living, wasanexample to others, and his death leaves a blank in the Church, and in the community, not easily filled. The deceased was a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland, and emigrated to this Island thirty-four years ago, settling in New Glasgow, and becom- ing one of the pioneers who were to reduce the virgin forest to cultivated farms.—Povt, ee a oe Married. WAR NEWS. | [By Telegraph to Reading Room and | ] Daily Examiner, } Lonpon, Dec. 13. Uneasiness in France continues and | foreigners are leaving Paris. The Emperor was present at Thanks- giving service at Osman’s headquarter’s yes- | | terday. He visited Osman and returned him the sword of bravery. The Porte was astonished at the fall of Plevna. They expected Suleiman would be able to relieve the place. Germany’s policy in reference to peace is that the Porte must make the first over- tures ; and it is thought doubtful that Rus- sia will accept mediation. The remainder of the dispatehes received are descriptive of the capture of Plevna. Osman Pasha crossed the Vid on two bridges and attacked the Russians with such fury that he captured eight cannon in al- most as many minutes, and almost annihi- lated Sobrisky’s grenadier regiment. Osman was then under the fire of one hundred heavy cannon, and was driven back on the banks of the Vid. Osman’s wound is not considered serious. Turkey is resolved to continue the war to the very last extremity. New York, Dec. 13. Exchange from 82 to 854. ———— Correspondence. Gold 103}, —_—-=- pey- We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions or statements of Corres pondents. Farmers and Barley. To the Editor of the Daily Examiner: Dear Str.—If the Dominion and Local Governments had entered into a conspiracy against the interests of the farmers of this Is- land, they could not have done their work more effectually than they did by their legisla- tion in both Parliaments last session. While the Local Government were busy hatching their imiquitious taxation Bill to screw money out of the poor farmers, a servile majority in the Dominion Legis- lature passed a revenue bill that large ly took away their ability to pay A tax of two cents a lb, on malt, is equal to a tax of 75 centsa bushel on barley. The Opposition ably opposed the malt tax, and clearly showed that it would operate against the farmers. It was clearly proven that brewer’s could not compete at all with im- porters, and pay two cents a Ib. on malt. But the great Free Trade Government re- lied on numbers more than on argument; and the tax on malt became a reality, which every farmer in the Dominion knows, to his sorrow. As predicted by the Oppo- sition, barley is now a drug in the Market, and many farmers who depended on the sale of it to pay their bills are unable to sell it at any price. If the duty was put on in the interest,of Temperance, there would not be so much cause for complaint. But such was not the case; for the importation and manufacture of Berlin spirits, rum, gin, and other poisonous liquors were allowed at a com- paratively low rate of duty. And we find the Premier of the Dominion making a bargain — during an election contest in Quebec, to admit liquors from France free ! Yours truly, AGRICOLA. Dec. 13th, 1877. Died.
