LETTER FROM ' MR. Housed“ HASZARD. SIR:—I ask space in yourpaperto cor- rect some. erroneous statements which appeared m Mr. Farquharson’s letter of last evening. Mr. Farquharsou was in Ottawa in April last, and so had the conversation with Sir Louis during that mouth. He then claims to have written a letter at Pomt du Chane on his way retnmn' 8 home, also in April, withdrawing the statements he made at Ottawa. He further states that be wired Sir Louis a few days later confirming his letter and at that time he had my word, that I would withdraw in his favor if he in- tended running. Unfortunately for Mr. ’Farquharson I am prepared to prove beyond a shadow of doubt that he is all at sea in his statements and dates. I happened to be in Ottawa on the 17th day of May and it was on that date that Sir Louis urged me to allow my name to be submitted to the people of West Queens. Ireturned home on the 20th of May, found matters somewhat differ- ent from what I expected. Having heard a rumor, that Mr. Farquharson might yet be a candidate, I called upon him to enquire whether or not he intend- ed being in the field, at the same time, I told him that if he decided to alter, I would stand aside but that it was necessary that he should let me know at once, as another gentleman was already canvassing the district in his own in- tel-est. Mr. Fsrquharson then and there gave meto understand that he would not be a candidate. I did not then how- ever decids positively to go mto the field, although urged to do so by a large number of Liberals of West Queens. I wrote to several friends and consulted many others, after which not hearing from MrFm'quharson as to his inten- tions up to the 22nd, of June, I wrote him on that date to which he replied on the 24th, of June—both letters are here- with submitted. In the first part of his letter Mr Farquharson claims to have statement made Ottawa in Aprii.whilst in the latter part of it he states that he decided to be a candidate on 24th June. Further explanation on this point seems noose . Whilst it is true that I did not invite myself into the field by a requisition drawn up at my request and afterwards signed by just ltwenty electors, I am proud to be able to assure Mr. Farquharson that I believe I had more of the electors of West Queens waitupon matoaskme tobe a candidate than he can boast of. June 22nd. 1901. .Dssn Mn anoumsos.- Adverting tothc conversation I had with you some time ago in reference to the vacancy which will likely soon be made in West Queens. As the time has now arrived when something definite should be de- cided upon, and not having received from you any intimation as to whether or not you intend to contest the riding,I have decided'to withdraw the ofler I made to you to retire in your favour. v. I find others are at work in their own tcrests, and as you intend leaving the Province ' next week for some time it will not suit me toallow the question as to whether I am likely 'to be a candidate or not. to remain any longer in doubt.
