A PURPLE, rippling line ujon tle water had for some little time been coming down upon them with great rapidity; but, bent on bloody work, they had not observed it. The , boat heeled over under a sudden gust; but the ruftian had already lost his footing under ' Hazel’s blow, and, the boom striking him ‘almost at the same moment, he went clean over the gunwale into the sea; his knife *9 struck it first, | All their lives were now gone if Cooper, 'who had recovered his feet, had not im- mediately cut the sheet with his knife; there was no time to slack it; and, even as it was, the lower part of the sail was | drenched, and the boat full of water. | ‘Ship the helin,’ he rosred. } The boat righted directly the sheet was cut, the sail flapped furiously, and the boat having way on her, yielded to ihe helm, and wriggled slowly away before the ‘whistling wird. Mackintosh opened his mouth te reply; but, at the same moment, his eyes suddenly dilated in a fearful way, and he went under water, with a gurgling cry; yet nct like one drowning, but with a jerk. The next moment there was a great bubbling of the water, as if displaced by \aome large creature struggling below, ‘and then the surface was stained with blood. And, lest there thould be any doubt as to the wretched man’s fate, the rude back fin of a monstrous shark came soon after, gliding aronnd and around the rolling boat, awaiting the next victin. Meantime, Cooper asked Mr. Hazel if he could sail the boat. ‘IT can steer, said he, ‘but that is al), My right arm is benumbed.’ The silvery voice of Helen Rolleston then / uttered brave and welcome words: ‘I will do whatever you tell me, Mr. Cooper.’ ‘Long life to you miss! said the then directed eplice and, in a word, to sail the boat; which she did with some little assistance from Hazel. And so they all depended upon her whom some of them had been for killing; and the blood-stained boat glided before the wind. At two p.m. Fenner jumped suddenly up, and, looking at the sea with rapture, cried cut; ‘Aha! my boys, here’s a beautiful green meadow; and there's a sweet breok with bul- Let’s have a roll among the daisies.’ And, in a moment, ere any of his stiff and wounded shipmates could put out » hand, he threw himself on his back upon the water, and sunk forever, with inexpressible rapture on his corpse-like face. A feeble groan was the only tribute those who remained behind could afford At three p.m. Mr. Hazel happened to look over the weather-side of the boat, as she heeled to leeward under a swart breeze, and he saw a shell or two fastened to her side, about eleven inches above keel. He lucked again, and gave a loud burrah. ‘Barnacies | barnacles!’ he cried. ‘I see them sticking.’ He leaned over, and, with some difficulty, detached one, and held it up. It waa not a barnacle, but a curious oblong shell-fish, open at one end. At sight of this, the wounded forgot their wounds, and leaned over the boat's side, detaching the shell fish with their knives. | They broke them with the handles of thei | knives, and devoured the fish, They were as thick as a man’s finger, «ni abvut an ‘inch long, and as swe@ct as a not. that in the long o1!m th se thell-fish had fostered on the boat, More than a burd- | red of them were taken off her weather-side, |and evenly d vided, | Miss Roles'on. at Hezel’s earnest re- quest, a’e only six, and these very slowly, GeO. DAVIES & CO. laid the rest by. It seens|'hink, that within turned purple in the fase, and began to breathe very hard. That black speck on the horizon had grown by noon to a beetle, and by three o’c]. ck to something more like an elephant ard it now diffused itself into a huge black clond, that gradually overspread the hea- vens; and at last, about half an hour before sunset, came a peculiar chill, and then, in due course, a drop or two fell npon the parched wretches. They sat, less like animals thar like plants, all stretching to- ward their perserver. Their eyes were turned up to the clouds, so were their mouths open, and their arms and hands held up toward it. The drops increased in number, and praise went up to Heaven in return. Patter, patter, patter; down came a shower, a rain—a heavy, steady rain. With cries of joy they put out every ves- sel to catch it, they lowered the sail, and putting ballast in the centre, bellied it into a great vessel to catch it. They used all their spare canvas to caichit. They filled the water-cask with it; they filled the keg that had held the fatal spirit; and all the time they were sucking the wet canvas and their own clothes, and their very hands snd garments on which the life-giving drop kept falling. Then they set their little sail again and prayed for land to Him who had seut them wind and rain. — (To be continued.) Be Kind to the Living. ‘Do not keep the alabaster boxes of your love and tenderness sealed up until your friends are dead. Fill their lives with gladness, sjeak approving words while their ears can hear them. and while their hearts can be thrilled by them. The words you man to say when they are gone, say b-fore they go. Tne flowers ycu mean to send f. r th-ir coffins, send to brighten and sweeten their howes before they leave them. If my friends have alabsster boxes laid away, full of perfumes of sympethy and affecton, which they intend to break over my dead body, I would rather they would bring them out now, and open them, that | may be refreshed and cheered by them while I need them. I would rather have a bare cu ffin, without a flower, then a life without love and sympathy. Let us learn to anoint our friends before- hand for the burial. Post mortem kind- nesses do not cheer the burdened spirit. Flowers on the coffins cast no fragrance backwerd over weary days, How many hearts might have been saved from break- ing bv the perusal of their obituary notices? Is it only after a man is dead we can say ‘‘He was brave and good”; or of a woman “She was kind and unselfish’? Would it be any harm to be a little kinder to the living? Many of our readers have doubtless heard of the famous travelling stones of Australia. Similar curiosities have recently been found in Nevada, which are described as almost perfectly round, the majority of them es lerge asa walnut, and of an irony nature. Wien distributed about upon the floor § table or other level surface, within two or three feet of each other, they immediately began travelling toward a common centre, and there huddied up in a bunch, like a Jot of egys ina nest. A single stone, removed to the distance of three and one-half feet, upon being released, at once started off with wonderful and somewhat comical celerity t» join its fellows; taken away four or five feet it remained motionless. They are found in a region that is comparatively level, and is nothing but a bare rock. Scattered over this barren region are little basins, from a few feet to a rod or two in diameter. The cause of these stones rolling together ia dovbtless to be found in the material of which they are composed, which appears to be loadetone or magnetic iron ore, The common belief that population in the West India Islands is stationary or de- clining is se far from being accurate that, as Sir Anthony Musgrave, Governor of Jamaica, points out in his recent report, it is increasing at a very much more rapid rate than the population cf the United Kingdom. The statistics of pepvlation in the islands show an increaze of 16 per cent. on the last'decenrial period, while the in- crease in the United Kingdom in the ten years preceding the last census was under eleven per cent. This large increase sp- pears to be general throughout the islands, and is only very slightly influenced by coolie immigration. ‘The population of the West Indies,’ adds Sir A, Musgrave, ‘is now greater than that of sny of the larger Australien colonies, and three times that of New Zealand.” —_ + We published a few deys ago some rather caustic personalities from the pen of Nicholae Flood Davin,of the Regina Leader, touching the editor of the Winnipeg Times. In the issue of the Times of the 6h instent, the editor retorts iv kind, saying, awong other things, “Mr. Davin is L. L.
