This proposition is entirely unnecessary. The people of Canada are intelligent enough to know that any sbort- age in revenue resulting from prob.b:tion must be provided for. This special phase of the question would undoubtedly be urged with all possible force by the liquor party and fully d'scussed in the press and on the platform so that no elec- cor will be called upon to vote blindly on the issus. The inferance that direct taxa- tion must follow prohibition is a dishonest attempt to prejudice voters in the wrong direction, The individusl members of the government do not believe that direct taxation would ever be neces- sary; but in order to prepare a loophole ahead through which to make their escape their “demon of indefiniteness,” Las sug- gested that insinuative little ‘“‘if.” They : Wiltshire, on May 24, William Henderson, Peters plebiseite which if it did no good did no positive harm. Tle great bulk of liquors used consiste of ales, beere and porter. From these very little revenue is collected; (in 1895—$50,246 49) not much more than the estimated cost of purchasing one obdurate constituency. Alcohol, naptha, absinth, alcoholic per- fumes, essences, ether, spirits of almonia and quite a list of other preparations classed as “spirits” in the tariff will continue to be used’ under prohibi- tion, thus leaving very important }roportion of the revenue undisturbed. | The impo:tation of gin amounts In dutiable value to more than any two liqvors combined. Frota this a revenue ot nearly $1,000,000 is derived. Gin is not a common drink in Canada. It is used almost wholly as medicine, and will continue to be largely so used. On this article there will probably be not more than a loss of one third the duties tothe treasury. On wines, ,vrandies and other spirits a smailer but certain percentage will be used for mechanical and medical purposes, the duties upon which the Government will continue to collect. A shortage in the revenue io the extent as magnified by the oppouents of prohibition cannot take place. The. abolition of those liquors as now us‘d exc'us vely for drinking purposes wil of Course entail @ falling off of revenue. How much can only be estimated, It may be two or three millions. Whatever the amount, can it be met without resorting to direct taxation. ee —--—— x SICK HEADACHE Positively cured by these Little Pills.
