Indies and Gentlemen: To-day we arrive at the close of another school year. and it is my duty and privilege to present to you a resume of the activities of this school for the year 1942-1943. The school re-opened last Sep- tember; there were 587 pupils en- rolled. 39 less than in September 1941, A large enrolment on the opening day is an indication that. the parents and guardians realize the importance of their children's education. Each year many parents see and realize more fully how indispensable a good edu- cation is. Many things which tend to distract and discourage pupils may be avoided if pupils are sent to school on the re-opening day, and every day possibJe throughout the entire schol year. _ As teachers, we endeavor to instill into the youthful minds the ideals of honesty, integrity and truthful- ness. The three f/gtors which iri- fluence a child are the home. the school and the church. Education beginsin the home and is continued in the school and the cl-iurch. Hence we see the necessity of a good homo environment. The children are pri- marily t-hie parents‘ responsibility, and parents should and must rcal- izs the grave responsibility which is theirs. Juvenile delinquency is on the in- crease here, as it is in most urban centres. The effects of the present war tend to make matters difficult in the school as well as in the homes. Due to the fact that many fathers continue to be absent on military duty, we find that the nec- essary parental guidance and con- trol is lacking in some cases. With tardiness we are not troub- led to any great extent. I realize that during the early winter months, in homes distant from school and in homes with many children. it is dif- flciilt to gct children to school at. nine o'clock Atlantic War Time. Probably in future the opening and closing hours may be advanced dur- ing the shorter and colder days of winter. We still have some parents who allow their children to remain away from school, or request that their children be permitted to leave school during school hours. without a suf- ficiently valid reason. '11'iis engend- ers in the youthful minds a spirit of indifference which is detrimental. During the mouths of December arid January a mild epidemic of mumps broke out. which effected for a time the attendance and pro- gress in the junior grades. During the year the Red Cross Nurses conducted their annual survey of the health condition of the niioils iii the junior grades. Good health is essential to 985th pupil to onstwe his success. The many physical defects pointed out and reported to the parents, should be carefully checked and remedied where at all possible. Dr. B. C. Keeping conducted an immunization clinic here and inoc- ulated many children against. that dreaded disease-diphtheria. May I remind parents that before a child may be permitted to enroll here, ‘he must be vaccinated successfully. Some parents leave all the teach- ing to the teachers. Some children begin school without knowing even their simple prayers. May I remind parents again that each day a ‘pupil receives homework assignments. something to do as well as to learn. Pupils in the lower grades espec- ially require supervision in their homes with i-hosc assignments. Un- less this is given the desired pro- Bress and advancement is greatly retarded in invariably every case. Under our present. educational set-up. too many pupils leave school without attaining the desired edu- cational standard. This h due to several reasons. the chief or which are lack of perseverance, the inabil. ity to master the subjects 1n in; senior grades, and indifference on Dart of the parents. Under the very ca able super- vision and idance o Mr. Barlow, the manus training department continues to do splendid work. The fact that many pupils who have VH3’ Brest interes and earnestness this work. and hence little in their academic studies. is proof of the great need of vocational schools. There are some men. former pupils of this lch00l. who are today earn- ing a llvlihood as carpenters, who obtained the initial knowledge of their trade in the manual training room. The past vaar has seen an in- crease in the use of motion picture films in our school. as m aid to education. Almost each month. dur- ing the schol year. Miss Hilda Giills. B. A . S. I refer to Lieut. Robert MacMfllan, D. S. C. with Bar. who in a mild and modest mariner spoke briefly to the pupils and staff assembled here. We are justly DIOUG of Lieut. The degree of proficiency attained compared very favorably with that of past years. The splen- did spirit of act-operation and good will existing between the members of the two Corps is very praise- worthy. That the turnout on in- spection day was a success was quite evident from the many favorable comments by the large number of our citizens who witnessed the man- oeuvers. Our school kitchen continued to function again during the winter months, as in previous years. with 150 boys being supplied each dflv with necessary extra nourishment. At first we had some difficult? in obtaining our quota of sugar; and now with the rationing of meat, more difficulty looms ahead.
