General Telegraphic News. official Russia been Sr. Pererssperc, Dec. 16.—The statistics of the cholera epidemic iu has just been issued. There have 157,417 deaths from European and 135,545 deaths from Asiatic cholera since the out- break of the disease in the empire, making a total of 265,760 deaths. Orrawa. Dec. 16.—The Canadian government has invited the imperal govern- ment to send a commission to enquire into the sanitary condition of Canadian cattle, at Canada’s expense. It is expected the result will be the removal of the embargo on Canadian cattle. Berwin, Dec. 16.—The Paris correspon- dent of Tagblatt says there is no doubt that the French department of war is con- vinced of the inadequateness of the present Lebel R fle to the requirements of modern warefare. A new model has been prepared to substitute for the guns of the obsvlete pattern, but during the existing critica] condition of politics the government fears to propose the re-arming of the army The defects of the present pattern were revealed, it is said, during the present Dahomey campaign, despite the flattering reports made public on the subject. Panis, Dec. 16.—Eugene Crampon, the murderer of two men, was publicly execut ed by the guillotine this morning. Cram- pon was in an agony of fear. When he saw the guillotine he became terrorized and dropped shrieking to the ground. The exe cutioner’s assistants were forced to carry him to the instrument of death and place him in position thereon. Rome, Dec. 16.—The settlement of the difficuities between the church and Father McGlynn has received full confirmation at the Vatican, and it may be stated on the highest au:hority that the Pope has given special power to Mgr. Satolli to settle the Reoina, Dec. 16 —Setherland, the nominee of the Haulteia party in the Northwest As sembly, has been elected speaker by a vote of 13 to 10; The new executive committee ot the Northwest Territories is composed as follows : F. W. G. Haultain, of McLeod; John Ryer. son Neff, of Moosomin; Thomas Tweed, of Medicine Hat; Hilliard Mitchell, of Mitchell. These are the same members as held office before Cayley's short lived regine. The course ot electing the executive, instead of following the usual procedure of the gov -rnor calling on some leading man to choose his colleagues, was adopted in consequence of Sir John Thompson's suggestion in his report of Sept- ember 29th, that this step be taken, as * Executive Committee” ordinauce was not in complete subordination to the Dominion acts. Hauitain and Governor Royal are at swords points, bus the former, unlike Deboucherville, of Quekec, will fight Koyal instead of resign- ing. —-- That Christmas Money. Iu the next few weeks people will talk Christmas more than all other subjects combined, And very many will count their pennies to see if they will go around. And some will realize for the countless things offered for sale *‘that money talks.” Yes, and many « poor tired clerk will wish that they too could talk—back. To give un- selfishly without thought of return is the true Christmas spirit ; but how many times. oh human nature, will the thought oceur this month **Now if I make so and s0 a Christmas present, wonder if I will get a return next year.” The growing Christmas present custom comes hard among certain classes, who do not always have plenty of ready money; ameng farmers and people near towns, who keep poultry, the egg supply is @ greet source of Christmas money, because prices are always very high at this seasun. If the old hens will only shell out the eggs now, thinks many a mother, I can soon get back all the money taken for Christmas. The surest way we have heard to get it back is this: E A Hubbard of Hatfield, Mass., says, ‘‘About one year ago I sent $5 for six cans of Sheri- dan's Condition Powder to make hens lay, and in January my twenty-eight hens Jaid twenty-nine dozen eggs. I have sent $5 this year for six more cans and the Farm. Poultry monthly.” Certainly that Christ- mas money came back in short order. Mrs. Warren Delano, Hampden, Me, said re cently to the manufacturers of this wonder ful Powder, “I send $6 for Farm. Poultry two years, and six large cans of Sheridan's Powder. Itis the very thing needed. Last winter my hens did so poorly [ almost lost heart, but this year 50 hens have cleared me $125.00. ‘All for a little courage and Sheri- dan’s Powder, her hens paid her more than double the average usually allowed per ben, so that her Christmas money returned manyfold. Husbands, a word to the wise is sufficient; Make your wives » Christmas pre- sent of six cans of Sheridan’s Powder and take no other. For 50 cents 1 S Johnson & Co, Boston, Mass, will send two 25 cent packs; five packs for $1.00;o0r for $1.20, one large ?} pound can of Powder, postpaid; six cans for $5.00, express prepaid.
