He left Calgary on July first and since then has covered s distance of 1,000 miles on foot, having re- ceived some lifts_ from automobiles, etc. However, Mr. Murray reports it is impossible to get a ride on an automobile in the province of Quebec, and New Brunswick is nearly as bad. Cooley Associated Press Financial Wrltor.) NEW YORK, Aug ii-nespm a long weekend. the stock marketi emersed today sleepy-eyed and; fatigued. barely able i0 drag itself i along in another d-ull and listless session. Interest in aoquirim stocks seemed to be negligible and the 11st as s. whole dropped fractions to a- round a point. The so-mllcd “wet" shares. as well as the gold issues, were more ales-t than the rest, clos- ing stesdy. Bonds were irregular in a narrow and sluggish market and the dollar showed a firm tone in foreign exchange dealings. Most commodities were fairly steady. Net Decline Transfers totalled only 1,222,280 shares. ‘The Associated Press-stand ard Statistics average for 90 sel- ected stocks showed a net decline of one point. ‘Iihe few stocks that did change hands todaywere largely among floor members of the hange. By and large, the trading community, and the general public appeared content to remain on the sidelines, with one eye on the recovery drive of the administration, and the other on developments in the grain markets. The Chicago Board of ‘Trade is schedu- led to remove the "pegs" which have limited fluctuations in grains, doubtless accounted for much of the hesitation. All grains closed unchanged, but wheat lost 1 to 2 cents a bushel mt Winnipeg. Cot- ton was fairly steady most of the day but closed 95 cents to $l-i5 a bale lower. Still Unchanged A general levelling off process apparently was indicated by re- ports from soune of the basic trade centres. Steel production, as esti- mated by the magazine "Steel" re- mained unchanged, with new buy- ing mtssded by uncertainties sur- rounding the industtryb code and its possible effect on future costs. The Department of Commerce in its latest report for the week end- ed Aug. 5 found business setivity showing a moderate recession, s1- though this was atributed in part to seasons/l influences. In the share market some of the gold stocks were in moderate de- lmand as s result of the Govern- ment's ruling that gold concent- rates might be exported. This means that American companies heretofore limited to the domestic market wits its fixed legal price of $20.67 per ounce, can tap the world market at London where refined gold is quoted around $30 an Just what price the unrefined metal will bring, after allowing for all charges, has now been author- itatively estimated.
