CHARLOTTETOWN WILL OB- serve Centenary of Living- stone.- David Livingstone was born on March 19, 181-;"-, on the banks of the Clyde at Blantyre n Lanarksh re, Scotland, the son of Neil Livingstone and Agnes Hunter. His parents were splendid represen- tatives of all that ls best among the working class of Scotland, honest, self-reliant and God-fearing. He work- ed in n cotton mill in his youth, and educated himself by reading. Having studied medicine and theology at Glasgow, ne was sent by the Loudon Missionary Society to South Africa discoveries, for which the Royal Geo- graphical Society awarded him a gold medal. He set out `agaiu_ for Africa in 1865, explored a portion of the continent westward from Zanzi- bar and, after enduring great hard- ships, died on the south shore of Lake Bangweoli May 1, 1873. His body was embalmed and brought home and buried in Westmlnister Ab- bey. But in addition to mission work Dr Livingstone opened up_ immense possibilities to great trading corpor- ations which have since entered Cen- tral Africa and mude enormous pro- dts. As an explorer he tracked de- serts and described the wealth of the country, in its plants, fruits und minerals. He strove for freedom und .security among the natives, and by striking a blow at the slave trade commenced n new era for the natives und for the traders who wished to carry on legitimate trade. A great union mass service in memory o the Centennial of Livingstone’s birth will be held in the First Methodist Church on Wednesday evening, March 19th inet. Every citizen of Charlottetown will be anxious to honor L.ivingstone's name by being present. ::Fi-ssh today, Liggett's and Molrs chocolates, one famed through Can- ada as the best and the other re- nowned thfoughout the United States box 60c., Liggett’s $1 a box.
