Dr. J. il Myers of- 'l‘oronto is in Charlottetown on the invitation of representative citizens to direct a social survey. The coiilnlittee in charge of this movement held a meeting yesterday and complet- ed arrangements to undertake work at once. It was decided to make it care- ful study of education, religious coiidi- tloiis crime-especially juvenile-re creation, hcaltli, charity, employment, &c., with a. view to finding actual con- ditons and suggesting improvement. Tile work will be carried on in the closest co-operation with existing or- ganizations, and will be done with the assistance oi! volunteer workers. There is nlilcli room and much need for such an undertaking as this in Charlotte- town and it is hoped that every assist- ance will be given the committee and those engaged with them in their iii- vcstigatioiis. Among thc cities ill Can- ada wliicli have carried oil a similar work are London, Ont., and Edmon- ton, Alta. Both these siirvcys created at great deal of interest and led to good results. ROAD IMPROVEMENT.- The spring freshets this year having been unusually mild, it has enabled un ex- ceptional amount of work to be done throughout the province in the im- provement of the roads, which are this year in a better condition than they ever were in the history of the province. While there are a few places where the roads have ilot re- ceived the attention they should have received, generally considered their present satisfactory conditloil is un- precedented. A good deal of the work was done late in the season on account of the into spring, but the summer proved to be fairly favour- able towards the carrying out of tho work on the roads. Special mention might be made of the improvement of the St. Petcr's road, especially where it runs between two cemeteries; it. has been better drained and the road bed has been improved considerably, the road surface levelled, the road bed now altogether better drained One from St. 1’etor‘s road to the Uiiioil road. This was done last fall and is an exceptionally good piece at work. peque road from Douse's bridge to North River road. This has been well drained, the bushes cut, and the road bullt'up considerably and properly rounded,-oif. Those road improvef ments have been satisfactorily noted proving ot' 'great beneiit. ::0wing to the price ot Anthrac- ite coal havng advanced at the mines, and the exceeding high rates ot freight, dealers are obliged to sd- vsuce the price oi! hart. coal here ilfty cents per ton on ima after Bap- temller 15th.
