Twelve months ago we called atten- tion to”’the excellent Shropshire sheep | They were : for crossing purposes. i few lots ot that time beme pul to pol ewes of different breeds ia this part ot the country, and we to make enquiries and r¢ port in due course as tO their suitability for such use. As the result of observation, and ex« perience, the report we have to give oa the inatter is highly favourable. They are rising inte favour in all parts of the Tae pi Ooms enqguii Ye . United Kingdom withsurprising rapid: | ity, and the partiality which is being showa for them is, we believe, fully des serve, For lambs for the fat market Shropshire rams are not surpassed by any other breed. These grow quickly to a good size, and they lay on fat very rapidly. It is for this fat lamb trade that they are most adapted. Pure-bred halfsbred ewes— Leicester or Lincoln and Cheviot— bree | splendid lambs when a ram of that variety is employed. The mothers grow very prolific, and the offspring grow to a larwe size, ure ready al aa early stage for the market, and are great favourites with the butchers. Strong wellsbred Cheviot ewes have alse been used with excellent results, aad blackfaced dams have cast good-sized lambs which came early to maturity when crossed with a tup of this breed. The halfebred Cheviot and blackfaced ewes are to be preferred in the order we have named them for this cross in respect of both the average number of lambs produced per owe, and also the earliness with which they are ready jor the fat market. We woald strongly advise farmers whe keep park ewes to give the Shropshire ram « fair trial, and if they use a well- bred sire and are fairly liberal io the feeding of their ewes we feel assured they will not be disappointed with the raising crossebred result. Some doubts have been ex~ pressed as to whether this eross is quite so suitable for ‘ hogging ' purposes as fer providing lamb for the early market. As far as we can learn they are not the kind of sheep to graze on naturaly poor pasture land, er in any circumstances where the keep—natural and artiticial—is indifferent. ‘To prove thoroughiy remunerative, and other- wise satistactory they require te be kept steadily well at all stages of their | growth. They demonstyate their suit- ability tor liberal diet by repaying’ with compound interest such generous treat- ment. Certainly n0 more extraordinary results have been produced with any class of sheep than with the cross be- tween the Shropshire ram and the halt- bred ewe in individual instances. We have advocated ia these columns more) than once the forcivg forward of the; best class of hiaif-bred lambs so that they should be consigned tv the fut market by Christmas time when they are about nine rnonths old, thereby saving the keep daring the coldest months of win- ter, When the progress they muke even oa the best of keep is compuratively small, The cross we are now writing about would suit admirably for this pur- pose. Such of the offspring as were! fouod sufficiently forward in condition might be consigtred to the early lamb market, and the remainder of the young fluck might by liberal feeding be kept in a steadily progressive state and be thereby made fit for the shambles by the time they are three-quarters of a year old. Such a system would have the twosfold advantage of entailing a shorter keep than is generally the case now, and of restricting the feeding en- tirely to those seasons of the year when the climate is most favorable for stock making rapid progress towards matus rity.—-Scotch paper. iat al ails Chat by the Way. It is not an easy task to so regulate yeur life that when you come to die you will pave nothing to regret. It is pérfectly evident to a well bale anced mind that everybody else in the world is called to be religious, and equaliy evident that you are yourself cailed to de justice as you please. A sotir Christian is jist like sour milk. Beth were intended to be sweet, but something has turned them, and after being turned they both become worth- less. A talse friend resembles a shadew. When the sun shines and you have plenty of money, the shadow and the friend are both close to your heels : but when ij comes to be dark, where is the shadow ? aod when your money is gone, and. you want to borrow trom the man who often borrowed from you, where is the friend ? If you leave the cork out of the bottle of perfume the perfume will all evapors ate; and if you are careless about your religion it will take itself off in the same way. National characteristics are very te- bacious. When an apple was thrown at a London actor some one declared that it wasa Scetchman who threw it. Thou:sh the aspersion was, however, con~ clusively disproved when it was asserted that ifa Scotohman had contemplated such an act of discourtesy he would osly bave thrown the peel.
