The male bird to head the pen should be as near to breed type as possible, with good color, and in addition should have, or show thc greatest signs of vigor and constitu- tion. It cannot be told until after his pullets have finished their lay- ing year, what his rcproductlveness is, but it is always advisable to keep the male bird, and if the results arc good to keep him for the next year's mating. In an outcross, that is getting a male bird that is in no ways related to your own flock, this is more advisable as the outcome can only be told from the product- iveness of his puliets and it has been found that crossing this male back to his own pullets, or grandchildren, that the best results have been ob- tained.
